Default Racer's Edge adjustable drop link installation: 944 S2

I've decided to open a new thread for this, the old thread doesn't deal specifically with the Racer's Ede product.

I have a pair of Racer's Edge adjustable rear drop links going into an '89 944 S2. No instructions were provided with the links.

They didn't come with bolts, just the links and two metal bushings. No bolts. The xisting bolts on the OEM drop links are much larger than the RE links. RE Links have a 10mm bore, OEM links use an M12 bolt.

The RE bushings have a 19mm OD and 10mm ID.

Any clues? Am I missing critical parts?

post a pix. one end of the oem link slides onto the inboard side of the camber adjuster bolt...threaded on both ends.

the through bolt at the sway bar is bolt head(M10-52), link, washer then lock nut

I am wonder of you have an aftermarket bar....or more logically, the rubber is missing from your old link.

It's an aftermarket bar, Porsche no longer sell or manufacture the M030 bars. Mine are Lyndsey Racing, to the best of my knowledge Mike Lindsey and his brother are the only people who still manufacture the M030 bar in it's original 3 position design. I went a little out of bounds with their five position bar.

As it turns out I just didn't understand the bolt; it's excentric and I'd never seen anything like it before. I'm not a professional mechanic, I love working on cars more than racing them, but I do enjoy racing them

I have the LR rear bar. This thread gets expanded greatly at:

Thanks again for your participation Thomas, you're a true wealth of information on these cars!

Yes, I saw the other thread after posting. It's rear brake night.

Good verbal visual from Van. Run a chalk line across the tread and see what is giving you the best contact patch for your alignment/springs. I kind like a soft butt so it won't wag in the transitions.

I picked up a Brey-Krause lower brace from Jason last week. Very nice increase in torsional rigidity for the soft top.

Not completely true.

Porsche no longer sells the 30mm 944 M637 [aka 968 M030] front sway bar. LR sells a replica 30mm bar, made by H&R if I remember correctly. But Porsche now markets a gen 2 968 M030 front sway that specs at 28.5mm.

Porsche does, in fact, still sell the 19mm 3-way 968 M030 rear sway bar. The LR replica bar, as you noted, is 5-way adjustable.

Thanks very much for that correction Allen. It won't do me much good since I bought mine a couple of years ago (life issues, I won't bore you with the details) but I'm sure it will help people who're thinking about this change now.

On a more personal note, you own an '89 930? Dare I ask what color? I've wanted an '86-'89 930 in Graphite most of my life. I've never had the intestinal fortitude to actually drive one though. That's likely my next project, If I have a next project...

Otto, was extremely fortunate to come across/adopt my [unmolested] 930...Guards/Champagne. A completely different experience from my 951.

Out of curiosity, where are you located?

BTW, regarding your build, the Firehawk-spec S2 cars were all fitted with the M637 [club sport] suspension from the Turbo Cup cars...30mm front sway [NLA], 21mm 3-way rear sway [NLA], 25.5mm rear torsions, and depending on venue, either Bilstein or Koni dampers with adjustable perches, front and rear.

Allen -

Sorry it took so long for me to find this, I didn't get poked by eMail when you replied and I'm just now getting ready to complete this installation so I'm re-reading everything in preparation. I got kicked by a horse in August and that slowed down my progress a bit

I'm in two places at the moment, half my time is in the Santa Cruz mountains of CA, where the car is, the other half is finishing my new shop/house in Paso Robles CA. I'm trying to finish what I call "phase I" of my S2 restoration before selling my house in Santa Cruz and relocating to the new shop in Paso. I'm still finishing the cabinets and floors in the new place, I don't have the lifts in yet.

Thanks for the details on the Firehawk cars, I'm depending on word of mouth and old threads on this forum for information, it's not easy to tease out either as you probably know. I have replaced the sway bars and the struts/dampers, I haven't yet replaced the torsion bar and springs. I would have but I was forced to cut that out in favor of getting the car ready to move. I've already installed solid/semi-solid engine and trans. mounts and re-built the transmission (added LSD, short 5th) and torque tube. New Spec Stage IV+ clutch & rear main seal. New O2 sensor. Re-built brake calipers. SS brake lines.

I'm still trying to figure out the intended geometry of the rear drop links, whether they go on the inside or outside of the sway bar connection. There's only one spacer on each side, looks like it goes on the upper connection, outside. No instructions for which side of the sway bar the lower connection attaches to.

I'll take some pictures, it's difficult to describe. My camera batteries are charging.

How long have you had the 930? Would you do it again? I've never driven one or known anyone who has. An old friend of mine from HS got a job crewing for a 935 team in New York back in the 80's but I haven't seen him since. I just love the way they look. It was Anthracite Black I've always liked, I think I wrote something else (Graphite) originally.

Regards,
Scott.

Adjustable rear perches? That implies they were fitted with rear coil overs? That's news to me and I'd like to confirm. If the Firehawks were fitted with rear coil overs I can do a torsion bar delete without breaking any stock car rules.

No worries, Scott. Hope that hoof didn't leave a permanent mark.

New house/shop in Paso Robles...nice!

When do you anticipate leaving Santa Cruz? We should grab coffee...have temporarily relocated from Washington to San Francisco.

Hopefully Jim, aka Oddjob, will chime in, but if not mistaken, the M637-spec Firehawk cars ran with 25.5mm TBs...same bars were carried over to the M030-optioned 951/968.

Photo of progressive front spring and rear Koni coil over damper from M637-optioned M754 Turbo Cup...

Again, if not mistaken, Canadian M637-spec cars, both Turbo Cups and Firehawks, were fitted with Bilstein dampers with adjustable perches, front and rear. For the M754 Turbo Cups, that setup is more commonly known as the Bilstein Escort Cup suspension package. And as far as I know [Jim would know for sure], those Koni M637 struts and dampers with adjustable perches are unobtanium.

By the way, if it helps, the rear sway bar arms align to the inside of the factory dog bone drop links [not my car]...

I hope I need a live in mechanic 'cause I'm it! Between my 928, the 944 and my wife's Audi A4 turbo I have my hands full though. That's why I'm putting two lifts in Paso. I also have a 2000 Durango and a 2005 Chevy K3500 Dually Crew Cab (wife's horse hauling machine) to take care of. I spend pretty much all my time working on cars or working on houses. Good thing I retired eh?

Hey, if you know anyone looking for a B&B in Big Basin Park that has a nice Barn/Arena and an Auto shop with 4 post lift, tell them to PM me for details...

Got it, thanks. It looks like there's a spacer between the drop link and the bar that I don't have. I'll call Racer's edge and see if I have some missing parts. That picture looks like what I expected, but I don't have that hardware in the kit. There was a missing circlip for a bushing retainer I've already discovered so it doesn't surprise me. Who ever picked those parts missed some stuff on my order I think.

Scott.
