Default Winter Coming... Road Salt

Semi-unfortunately the season seems to be nearly upon us, and I find myself with no other means of transportation besides the 951 and the bus system. Public transportation happens to be a joke here. So... given that I'm in Michigan, and for some reason our state officials are silly enough to use straight salt instead of gravel or glucose, I may have to drive the car in the snow ( to some degree ) for the season. Are there any steps that I can take to protect the car aside from being well waxed and washed? Can I apply anything to some of the exposed underbody sections, or my one area behind the driver's side rear wheel well with a tad of rust? Or should I be alright... Is this something to avoid at all costs ( spending three hours on a bus each day is _not_ fun, I've done it before ) Maybe I'll be able to repaint the car this coming summer and buy a beater

Thanks in advance,
Sach

I've heard of spraying with parafin (wax) but I've never seen exactly how this is accomplished. Get a junker car. Or hose off the 944 with hot water every night you come home.

Lots of firms do an 'oil' spray - just pick a good one. Krown Rust Control is what I recommend here. If you do it yourself, use new oil and be prepared to have it drip for a week - the commercial mixes are more like penetrating oil and only drip a bit. I recommend avoiding the "no-drip" mixes - they are so stiff that they don't flow into fine cracks, which is what your greatest danger is in a dip-galvanized body like our Porsches.

Fishey. You should really pull over and get some sleep after five years.

Up in NY, always used to go to Delta Sonic. Cheapest place for gas, and a car wash. And had jets to spray underneith and get rid of the salt...

If you have rust started, not driving it will not slow it down.. You need to stop the rust now. Rust never sleeps is not just a phrase. you need to sand it out and then seal the metal and paint it. IF you have rust the galvanization is already gone. Salt is not all that bad. just needs to be washed off regularly I do mine once a week. I have driven the last 3 years in the winter here in mich. This is why paintchips need to be attended to regularly..

Hm... I think I shall drive for the winter, but on days with heavy snow and salting I'll take the bus. With any luck I'll be able to repaint the car some time anyway

Thank all,
Sach
