Are aluminum flywheels worth the money???
If you have one what are your impressions of them? Are they worth the money? Anyone have one they would like to sell or where is the best place to get one?? I'm replacing my torque tube, so this may be one of those "while I'm in there things"...I have plans to do the clutch and rear main aswell.

Just finished putting a Fidnaza in my 951 on Wed. I have to say that it is not as radical a change as I thought it would be. It does make a large difference in rev-matching to downshift and I am definitely getting better acceleration (especially first) with the same boost level. From idle, with the car stopped, the revs rise more quikly than My NA.

i can tell you where to get it - in my opinion, the best shop on the web and they have it for $319
http://www.clutchexpress.com
best customer service i have ever encountered anywhere. they might not have it in stock so they will have it drop shipped from fidanza. it got to my house in 2 days (pretty damn quick)
i bought the na part which, as i finally found out, doesn't work on the s or s2 cars (even though it's advertised everywhere as the non-turbo part). this is fidanza's fault, as they didn't know it didn't work on the s and s2 at first. when i called up clutch express cause i had to return it, i was expecting to hear "tough luck" because i bought the wrong part (i ordered by part number instead of just asking for one for an s2. i figured there would at least be a restocking fee. the person i talk to apologized over and over for his screw up (which he didn't at all since i just ordered the wrong part) but he still felt that he should have asked me what car it was going on and then verified that it worked. that is, bar none, the best experience i've ever had with a vendor, and their prices are the cheapest i've found. compare their $319 with paragon's price of $625 for the same part.

The alu ones go for about 600-650 new, eBay you can often grab them for 400 or so. Someone makes a stock lightened one for about 350 if I remember right.
PITA rating? Same as changing a stock flywheel, which means clutch job.

yeah, this flywheel is cheaper than the stock one in most places. it is free, and very quick shipping. usually free shipping means it's coming by donkey but not in this case. just remember, if you have an s or an s2, this will not work. also, is anyone else a bit miffed that so many companies seem to be making over 100% profit on this item? how come paragon can't make their price more reasonable?

IMO aluminum flywheels will give a very minimum performance gain of themselves. If you need th change your flywheel and the aluminum is about the same price, then I think it's buyers choice.
Now if you couple the alum flywheel with a lightweight clutch and PP, then you will probably see a performance gain. 944 PP and clutches are pretty heavy.
One of the tricks on another car I have is to use an automatic trans flexplate and adapte a Tilton multi plate clutch to it. Stock flywheel and clutch is about 36 pounds, flex plate and Tilton clutch, about 13 pounds. Huge gain there.

Randy, can you give more details about the auto trans flexplate/Tilton multi-plate setup? Costs, what's involved, more details?
dualblade, I do find it a bit odd, that's a HUGE markup, though I've gotten somewhat apathetic, Corvette and Porsche parts are hugely marked up.
Thanks!
