What are the boxes for? Mufflers?
I know there are a couple of manufacturers (Bursch, Dansk) that make cat-back exhausts that I'm sure are lighter than the stock cat-back. I doubt they were built with light weight in mind, but the factory exhaust is fairly heavy.
I've had the stock S cat-back on my scale and it's about 33 pounds. I haven't weighed the front half but I would estimate it's around 25-30 or so? Mine doesn't have the cat anymore, though. I think you could probably drop about 15-20 pounds off of that if you had a good lightweight system.
I am preparing to build my own exhaust from scratch in a month or two, I'll be using 2.5" stainless tube, a lightweight high-flow catalytic converter, a largish resonator + a medium-size muffler, and a MSDS 944S header. I haven't gotten the header yet but the weight of all the other components is about 20 pounds. I'm expecting the final product to come out to 30-40 pounds total. If you really didn't care about having a quietish car for street use and didn't use a cat, you could shave another 5-10 pounds off, probably.

Thats less than I would have thought, based on my measurement of the cat-back section. Then again, the S exhaust has an additional small resonator that would add a few pounds. So mine would probably be around 40-42 for the exhaust up to the y-pipe. That sounds about right.

As with all changes / mods the best comparison is of course with what you've taken off and what your putting back etc...
The total weight loss for this project so far is almost 500Lbs,
Lots gone that I don;t need, and lots replaced with the same function but lighter.
It's expensive, but addictive and once your start, difficult to stop!
You only have to pick up (Or not) some of these fashionable Motorcycle Ti / carbon mufflers that are insanely light!
