87-89 strut insert... anyone get creative?
Hi,
Yes I'm aware Koni makes a GREAT insert kit for these "sealed" units.
But you fabricators out the in your shops or garages... anyone get creative with earlier model inserts inside of late model strut housings for an affordable alternative?
Lets see some more options for the late model struts.
Also, will an 86 944 shock work for an 88?

Another Q:
Upper strut mounts (where front strut meets body). How are the early vs. late different? Is the strut piston rod a different diameter on these years? Why'd Porsche change?

There's not much difference in price between the cut the strut 8641-1414 Sport insert and the earlier style 8641-1038 Sport insert. As mentioned, if you have an original sealed Koni strut, Koni can disassemble and rebuild it. They can revalve, convert to external adjustment or even double adjustable if you like. The early style upper mount was a separate rubber insert:

that fit up into the metal plate with studs. The later style is all one piece and stupid expensive:

You can backdate if you can pick up the metal part with studs off another car. The piston on the early style insert is the same size as the later insert.

Take a look at Audi A6 or B4 Passat struts, they have a little stirrup on the end that could be cut down to make a post to bolt in like the Koni conversion. Just a thought.

The mounting bolt spacing for the spindle is different on the early vs late offset cars... And also the flange thickness on the spindle is different between them.
