Default Correct muffler?

Since I've owned my 944 I've always wondered if I have the correct muffler on it. The tail pipe angle look's wrong and its not chrome. It's also quiet too. What do you think?

Anybody? It looks to me someone put one from a Turbo car there at one point.

I seem to remember there being a chrome exhaust tail pipe cover, not the entire thing being chromed.

It's hard to tell from the picture but the tailpipe comes pretty much straight out and there's a lot of space between the tip and the bumper. I'm leaning towards replacing it with a Dansk cat back system.

There is a chrome tip in the PET. Last one I saw was going for about 110.00....on Fleabay or P. Parts. might want to check that out further with other outfits. No clue as to what the dealer might want for it..if it is still available...

Didn't know the tip was a separate piece. I looked into it and a superseded part is still available from Pelican parts. Not being chrome doesn't bother me as much as the tip comes straight out (like the Turbo cars). Maybe I'll try to heat it up bent it up. What do I have to lose if I break it? If it works, I'll just get the tip. If not I'll get the Dansk exhaust.

They all come straight out.

No reason for a Turbo unit to be shaped any different.

Reason it's low (doesn't look that low) is probably a missing or broken hanger. Or two.

Exhaust tip is available in chrome or black, same P/N oddly.

From pictures I've seen of the Turbo cars the tip looks to be bent down slightly to clear the added trim piece under the bumper. It's definitely low and looks out of place. There are no broken hangers on the car and the muffler seems to be in the correct position. There is about 1 inch clearance between the muffler and the heat shield. Yes the original p/n are the same for the chrome and black but with a "C" or "B" prefix. The superseded part has a "G" prefix.

Follow up to this. A little heat, a little pressure from a floor jack and a block of wood and presto the tip is now at the correct angle. I didn't think it was going to end well but I was surprised.

When the time comes, I say get the Dansk system. Put it on my 85.5 NA last spring and it's a beautiful piece. The muffler looks identical to OE but lovely polished SS finish with integral tail pipe. Fits beautifully and looks right. Sounds great too! Not much louder than OE but a bit more aggressive/sporty sound without being at all buzzy. Seemed like a bargain at the around $350 I paid.

Dear Marc: I have two exhaust systems. There is a slight difference between the early and later cars. The early ones had a 3 bolt flange coming out of the cat, and the later ones had a 4 bolt. The exhaust tip on both are chrome and are oval. My early one has seen the ravages of many NE winters and is deplorable, hence the purchase of the second unit (used). Glad that you got your system worked out..You might check out Borla or Bosal for a system. I checked out Abarth and they only had stuff for the Boxsters and 911's. Same thing with Stebro. I think I'll cut my tip off and install a clamp on until I can afford a Dansk..:>)) !

Tiger - the 4-bolt square flange is a 944 Turbo piece.

Don't know yet..engine still out of the car, and I've never gotten to drive it yet..after 3 years of wrenching on it..color me stupid. Thanks for the tip, V2 on the turbo exhaust. Van didn't say what it came out of..but it's better looking than mine, so I'll change the flange over to the 3 bolt one, and put it on after cosmetics. don't have a clue about the noise levels yet... sorry Marc.

The factory did indeed have a straight chrome trim piece.

I have the Dansk system mentioned above for a decent price especially if use the RENNLIST 10% discount code.
