Amazing!! WOWZERS!! so That's what they looked like when they were new! MGJ you're gonna have a tough time beating this guy at the concours! BTW, MGJ, can you post any shots of your early cars? I would like to see what my hog is supposed to look like when it was new, then neglected and abused..Thanks.

Folks,
Been following this thread for a very long time and watched the sale of this car on BaT as well. Great story. Now it's my turn! Given the strong following of the beloved 944 that you all have, I thought you might be interested. My car is a 1985.5 with only 695 original miles. The back story on this car is very interesting. You can see the auction at http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1985-porsche-944-7/

I have all of the paperwork for the purchase at the time the prior owner bought it from the dealer. In there is a document that showed he paid for a dealer provided appearance package (paint and upholstery protection) and he also paid $89.95 for the pinstripe. It is not painted on.

Common practice at the time for dealers to add pinstripes via a local provider. My 84 Scirroco had dealer added "accent stripes @$89.95 and "Waxoyl Fab-Gard also @$89.95.". My 87 16V Scirroco had the same plus paint sealant and Drydene rustproofing. I gave the 87's window sticker to the guy that bought the car so I don't have any figures for it Pinstripes were also added to used cars to spiff them up for resale. I worked at a VW dealership when I was in college. That's where I picked the knowledge about ZVW prefixed part numbers for "Autobahn" branded parts supplied by VW & Porsche of North America outside of the VW and Porsche supply chain. I'm always amazed at the amount of VW part numbers I spot, but why reinvent the wheel Most VW parts can be identified to the original car it was designed for, where it goes and what it is by the 9 digit part number. At the time I was very impressed with the methodical system used by the Germans.

I have posted photos of some of my early 944s on various pages I've started on this forum.
Out of respect to the original poster, will not do so here. And besides: they pale in comparison to the two examples seen in these photos........but that is secondary to the nature of his story.
Thanks for the suggestion tho, and considering that they may be worthy of merit.
I hand the forum back to alfagt for his continuing saga of his delightfully great Series 1.

MGJ, I was trying to get that red car, but every time I teed up my bid, a higher one came in. I think it was "well bought" and just wish I had the $ to be in the auction at the end. That said, I agree that the 3600 mi car (now 3700+) was worth what seemed to be a lot of dough.
Now I'd like to get another great car with a few more miles so I can drive it without worrying too much about signs of use. Consider me on the hunt.

oh wow Joe.
That's gonna be a hard one to part with isn't it ?
Alfagt. I did the same thing you are considering about 15-20 years ago. Started to buy up other lower mile cars with great options and one, sometimes two previous owners, for keeping the low miles on several of my first loves. One of which I bought new in 1984. An M456 Sport suspension, LSD, FUCHS car I bought as my first Porsche.
Am sure glad I did because prices have only risen over the years for the really good cars. One I bought for 1800 bucks. A perfect interior, no dent, no rust, 3 sets of wheels equipped, sunroof delete, 40,000 mile 944 na.
Another I got out of Las Vegas for around 300 dollars less, but non running ( rotor set screw had fallen out and dropped the rotor ), AND still another Series 2 for 585 dollars which ran great but had a few needs such as paint, cracked dash, etc. Seats had already been replaced from a later series 2 car. And was also an M456 - 944.
THOSE days will never return on the type of condition these cars were/ are. Vehicles much more ragged, rusted, and in dire condition have replaced those bargains on the marketplace of 2017.
BEST wishes on the hunt.
And you may want to look at Joe's low mile queen. The pictures blow me away on condition .........

As a cue point on pricing, the white Sport Touring package 944 with 28,000 miles I bought last year, ( and seen in my profile pic ) which was used on the Concours field with numerous awards and trophies, and coming out of dry central Montana, was purchased for about what you paid for your pristine '83.
Just a shade less in fact. On a private, one on one sale with an owner who cared for and loved about 58 collector Corvettes, Muscle Mopars and GM out of the late '60s, and variations of '32 Fords. He was the kind of enthusiast one wants to deal with any day of the month, year, decade. Fanatic in care, fanatic in presentation, and fanatic in desiring the car to go to the proper owner. I felt privileged he selected my offer. This level of NA 944 is seldom encountered on the street or show field. Even on a national level. You will see a few at the Parade in Spokane this year and will be astounded by those cars. But they seldom come up for sale and when they do, it's private and money is not spoken of to the general public.
