honestly, the round throttle cam should be step 0 when buying a 944.
something you do before anything else.
it really transforms the car...to the point where when you get into a stock 944, you think something is broken because it feels like there's no power coming off stop lights.

it is a huge difference in driving feel. obviously no power gain but the responsiveness is incredible.

Does this round throttle cam apply to S2 too? Very curious to try this 2 degree camshaft key also. ;p

no, the S2 has a direct throttle actuator cam as-is.
the NA has a progressive throttle cam as factory which makes the initial gas pedal movements barely open the throttle blade until you really get in it.

i suppose the cam advance thing is doable on an S2 but its more complicated due to the dohc arrangement.

If you're going to an aftermarket EMS, MegaSquirt is worth considering...

How does the throttle cam mod affect the clutch engagement on "take off". I would think it would make the "take off" RPMs more difficult to control? The 944 has the easiest clutch engagement RPMs control of the 3 cars/truck I own.

You just have to adjust your foot to push less on the pedal to get the RPMs to where they need to be to take off.
I barely have to touch the pedal.

Hum, I'm not sure if I want to "start down that slippery slope" with this car. I have another car for that. But anyhow thanks for the reply.

I'm pretty sure the 944 S2 is like the 968, in that the camshaft sprocket is adjustable. Meaning, you don't need an offset woodruff key. On the 968, the key slot in the sprocket is much wider than the key, so you have like 15 degrees of room to phase it.

On the S2, there is no VarioCam, so setting the correct valve timing is much easier. First, make sure you set the timing correctly (as a baseline), THEN advance it if desired.

It would be a good idea to find out piston-to-valve clearance on the 16 valve cars before trying to advance or retard timing very much.

The 8 valvers will run with the cam gear a full tooth (9*) off in either direction, but I don't know how much tolerance the DOHC arrangement has.

Like I said, there is like 15 degrees of adjustment room in the 968 sprocket; this entire range is safe. So if you wanted to advance the cam by 2 degrees, assuming you weren't at the edge of the adjustment range, you could safely do it.

Just got a '84... Some of this doesnt make sense (not that handy under the hood YET), but it will be one of those things to try when I want to do something to it later... (or sooner, seems like its more essential than something cool to try)...
