Hello my name is chance I have two 944's an '88 that's my dd and a '87 S that's a project car. I'm selling both and trying to get into 924's because I love the room for expansion. But to get to the real question is I know that 924's and 16v gti motors have the same fi system I just need to know how to adapt the gti bell housing to the 924 Torque tube. And any other things that could help this swap

 

They are both Bosch CIS fuel systems... so are Volvos, BMWs, Audis, Ferraris, etc. of the time period. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a good candidate for a swap...

Typically for engine swaps you need to worry about the engine height/width/length, engine mount configuration, bell housing/clutch configuration, exhaust plumbing, intake plumbing, wiring, throttle linkage, coolant plumbing, accessory packaging, etc.

 

Why do you want to swap a GTI engine into the 924? the 924 engine makes more power and it is stronger in every way.
The 924 engine offers adjustable solid lifters and almost perfect square ratio (piston run vs diameter).
It also uses a crossflow head design which can be improved and together with other mods can nudge on the 944 power levels.
It also has a lot of weight you can shave off its components for performance use.
There are solutions for increasing the capacity to 2.2L or even 2.3L....i have read somewhere that 2.4L is possible too.

The 924NA engine is a very strong one, its block comes from Daimler diesel earth movers and the head is a VAG design that has been revised by Porsche. (the turbo head is redesigned by Porsche)

Basically a 150hp 924NA can be had fairly easy by increasing compression, adding some lightness to the crank, conrods and flywheel, using propper headers and tuning the cam advance.
Sure one could spend loads of money for few hp gains but the main thing is increasing the compression and taking off material off the heavy parts...and an adjustable sprocket is not that expensive.

Thanks for the input I thought more about it the reason I was wanting to do the swap is because I plan on drifting a 924 or a 944 because of the almost perfect weight distribution. Because I bought a '87 944S to drift but there to expensive if I broke something. And 924's where I live are practically free and I love the carrera gt body kits they have an I was wondering if u guys could put down some links for some 924 performance parts. Thanks

 

if you trade your 944 for a 924 you'll be 50% down on power from the get-go.
not to mention there are just some parts that are totally NLA for the 924 motor.

if you get a 924 put a more serious engine in it like the modern 1.8/2.0T or the VW2.5 I-5, rather than the ancient, rare, and hard to keep going (due to parts availability) VW 2.0 from the late 15th century.

 

Yea I love the 944 but I don kno much that can be done to the na 944. And that's what I was saying swapping an engine in a 924 would be pretty cool.

it's bad enough you're considering pouring money into a 924....

now you want to do what??

just because the laws of Physics don't rule something out, doesn't mean you should go ahead and do it.

what's the gain in building a car that's going to be utterly worthless?

you really want to impress yourself? put a 3.7 I-5 Hummer 3 motor w/ a turbo into like, a 968.

at least the juice will be worth the squeeze.

 

Convert the 924 motor to EFI, boost it, and enjoy 951 power levels. Don't forget to get a trans that will stand up to the abuse.

 

How would I boost it do they make any turbo kits for em I read that it's tactically the same motor in the later bed could I use a turbo kit from one of them. Or could I just take a 931 manifold and put it on a na?

 

Depends on what you're looking for. There isn't aftermarket support for these old cars like there is for newer more widely produced ones. Thankfully suspension upgrades are pretty well available for the 924/944/968 with lots of options depending on what you're looking for and how much $$$ you want to spend. Very few companies make drivetrain upgrade parts and most if not all are for the 944 turbo engine. I don't think there are any for the early 924 engine.

Or take less money and buy a 951 to begin with and have 10x the car.

 

thanks man yea I was looking at 951's there just so expensive in the Bay Area I bought a S hoping it wasn't as expensive as I've herd but it's not reliable enough for drifting but my friends use 951's and the only thing they say is that the turbo lag kinda sucks
