Noisy belt -944t
Hey all,
I just got my 951 from the shop, I had them install the belts and some rollers. I notice now that it whines. Can the belts be too tight or loose?
Or some other thing?
thnks

they probably installed the belts a little on the tight side, anticipating the stretch. make sure that they retension, and actually retension after 1,500 miles. all our cars still whine a little, to me its come to symbolize the sound of the car

If your belts are whining then they are too tight. I am almost positive that this causes more stress on the waterpump and rollers, so it is probably a good idea to have them retensioned properly.

the belts will whine when they are new, 1500 miles is too soon to re-tension them, they will not have fully stretched at that point, then they will be too loose when they have, running the belts loose can dramatically shorten their life.

The belt whine is the balance shaft belt being too tight. It makes that noise when it goes over the roller. I drove mine like that for almost 2 years without problem (except sounding like a jet plane).

I concur with badass and Matt H. A lot of folks overcompensate for these cars' reputation for timing belt catastrophes by overtightening the belts, which reduces the life of your water pump and rollers. In my experience, the balance shafts are the most common source of whine but it may be too much stress on the water pump, or both. First step is to run the engine with the balances shaft belt removed and see if its the water pump. If not, reinstall the balance shaft belt and properly retension it.

OOPS! that was my guess as well. If he thinks they are too loose then we will give him tight.
