I've got 2 batteries, still as blinding today as when I first made the change about 4~5 months ago. I'm actually seeing spots at this very second cause I looked into the light... d'oh!

I use two. I believe it wil depend on what batteries you use. Mine are still as bright! Do a search for all my posts. I had a very long and detailed post on it where i gave the part numbers and specs on what i use. Oh...actually...that one company has it on their site. Damn, which company was it...they sell they steel fuel lines i believe...

Blues2
the pics and directions are not available in the archives, maybe you can re-post for those who missed it.
My switch is not making full contact Ill take it apart and make sure the connetion is better.A little wiggling and it gets much brighter!

Still interested in someone who used 3 batteies.

I use 2 in mine, but I pirated all the parts from a "giveaway" LED light. so.. Mine isnt as bright as it was a year ago- either that or I want a brighter LED!!

EDIT~ Check the archives- they may still be there. I saved the webpage for reference/ part #'s on my server at home
but it is currently offline.
S2-If need be I can copy and repost in a few days...

Im using 3 batteries but IIRC the difference between 2 and 3 batteries isn't really noticeable. It's also still as bright as the first day.

The LED I got for mine is crazy bright (something like 9000mcd if I remember right...). Anyways just for comparison it's about as bright as my 20w Halogen desk lamp. Not sure how long batteries will last though as I haven't had a chance to install it yet.

Might have to get a new keyhead though as I lost the crest out of my current one and can't find it .

I'd check for a loose connection inside the keyhead.

P.S. You could also check the grounds!

Connections look good, batteries seem weaker now than this am.Looks like a poor connetion to the copper base when button is pushed.Anyone have to shim to make a good contact?Seemed like it was ok for a while now battery is near dead.A lot of fiddling for something so dumb!!!!

Blue S2 your directions use energizer 389,I have cr1220,also I used previous complicated instructions soldering and wire.Ill try the 389 and see if they help.

Definitely a wiring issue then.
If you're worried about it weakening, take the parts out and connect them, making sure everything has good contact. If it's still weak, then your batteries are too weak or dying. Also check the voltage of the battery(ies): make sure its greater than the voltage rating of the LED. And check the current on the circuit, make sure it's acceptable for the LED.

I use 2 3V batteries on a 3.3V white LED from radio shack. They'll probably cut the LED's life from 1000 years to 500 years, but it's really bright!

Some tips based on my experience building one:
If you use multiple batteries, tape them together, mine had an annoying tendency to slip apart.
Cut two grooves in the lip of the button to hold the LED's leg in place.
If you bend the copper strips in the key you can get better contact.
