Default Tip for oil changes

Hi, I'm been doing this on every oil change. For those that aren't aware you can get about another half litre (or more) OLD oil outta your engine by tilting the car when draining at oil change time.

I do the same thing if I change the oil using a jack. If its on the lift then I just let it drain until nothing more comes out. Standard fare. Nice pics of the car Noah!

Any tricks for pulling oil filter without getting oil spilt everywhere ? I tried puncturing a hole on top of the filter and that just made a huge mess. Check valve doesnt allow that trick to work.

its not the mess that bothers me, its getting oil on the belts. i usually stuff rags all around my belts since i run with no gaurds, then deal with the mess on my garage floor.

Still messy but: I replace the filter while the car is cocked like this. You'll notice a little bit more oil comes out of the oil pan when the filter is removed.

I offer 2 alternatives, both methods requirer a smaller catch pan... (something like a windshield washer fluid container bottom (like 4 inches tall).

1) The non-turbo cars don't have a bat-wing underneath, just a engine pan. You can slide the small catch pan in near the power steering pump. Then go up top & QUICKLY remove filter & toss it in the catch pan. This is theoretical-I have removed my p.s. pump & light linkage, so access is a little easier...

Doug's suggestion of rags is a great addition!

2) I remove the front 3 engine plastic tray bolts (10mm) and tilt it downward into a tray on the ground & just wipe the inside of the tray after.

"Brake-clean" aerosol spray and rags are your friend.

Personally, I never tip for an oil change.

Since this is an oil thread, we need to have several more pages of discussion on what angle to tip the car, for how long, depending on summer/winter/phase of the moon etc etc...

...lol...

...anyway it's a great idea, keep 'em coming!

Cheers,
Mike

Tipping is entirely voluntary. Some folks tip 15%, some 18% and really generous people tip 20%. But I think we all can agree that tips automatically added to the bill is a bad business practice.

Oh wait, we're talking about changing oil not tipping wait staff. Never mind. :-)

^ Oh god it's started. I've heard 0W-20 will drain the best with the smallest angle!

I changed my oil today and had the car on two jack stands in the front. I then jacked up the driver side an additional 1" with respect to the top of the jack stand on that side, I got another 1/8 quart or so. It had already been draining for 10 mins and the engine was warm before I started.

Well I have no opinions on oil wt or brand - However I have been really happy with my oil filter choice. I use Canton Mecca spin on with a replaceable cartridge, much less spill as I pull off the top and extract the cartridge = https://www.cantonracingproducts.com/. I have had mine several years so I cant link the same model. I also use ZDDP MAXX in my oil.
