Hi There
I have a 1990 UK spec 944S2. Just recently when I start it from cold and drive it for about the first 3 miles the camshafts are really noisey. Once it's warmed I can slowly take it up to about 3000 rpm and the noise dissapears instantly and doesn't return. I had this problem before, but it was cured when it went in to have the head gasket done. I suspect it's the hydraulic lifters, but I'm surprised as it's only done about 6000 miles since the head was rebuilt. Anyone got any suggestion on how to cure it. Also, I'm not sure if it's due to the unusually hot weather we've been having here, but I noticed the oil pressure fluctuating at idle when the engine is hot. Oil is topped up and looks fairly clean.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Adam

Does sound like lifters. Are you sure they were replaced when you did the headgasket? If not then they easily could leak down some. Replace with thicker oil and the problem will probably be less severe.

Generally the oil pressure is at max, but when the engine is hot maybe after a long trip the pressure drops to about 4 at idle. Though recently we've had really hot weather here and I've noticed the pressure drop even after fairly short journeys.
Guess I'll give it an oil and filter change and see how it is after that.
Thanks for the help guys

I'm surprised lifters would get quieter after a head rebuild. Have you changed the oil since then? Maybe you used thinner oil than what the shop put in?
Or maybe they replaced a lifter or two and now some others are on their way out?

I am having the same problem in my 92 968 engine. I have heard that running the car for a short time with some dexron ATF in the oil just before an oil change can help with this. Something about the ATF cleaning the lifters or something. Anyone know if there is any truth to this? I would hate to try it and damage something.
