Question Who got da jiggly mirror?

Word up everyone, it looks like my newly acquired '86 $hitbox has developed a case of the jiggly mirror on the passenger side. The mirror glass shakes so much while I'm going down the road that I can't see anything in it. At night, it's looks like a disco ball and will just about drive a dude nuts. I guess the bubble gum holding it together fell out.

The actual mirror base is not loose, it's just the glass portion that shakes. Can I simply pull the glass off and re-glue (or bubble gum) it back into place?

Many Thanks,

Hmmmmmmm.....jiggley mirror?

Mirrors on the 86, and I guess all 944's for that matter
have four main parts if I recall:
1. mirror glass component
2. motor assembly
3. upper motor housing -the painted part
4. lower arm mount-this bolts to the door
Plus guts and fasteners to hold it all toghether.
Motor assembly or motor movement could be loose (less likely)
or mirror glass unit is not secured to the motor
assembly (likely). The mirror glass is bonded to a plastic backer
housing that uses a knurrled twist ring to attach to the
motor housing. The ring is somewhat big, say 3 to 4 inches
in dia. You remove the mirror glass by accessing the
lock ring thru a hole in the BOTTOM of the thick
black mirror rubber surround.
Shine a flashlite up in there and you can see the ring either
thru the hole or behind the mirror if you move it all the
way to one side or the other. Take a medium flat blade
screwdriver and catch one of the large knurrles and move
ring to the left to loosen (lefty loosey/righty tighty).
It should come right off. Study to see how it goes together
and then check motor and other bits for looseness.
Install is opposite as removal
and make sure ring is locked in all the way.
Good luck!

Dont clip the spring either . The driver's side always seems to be the worse of the two, it hits more wind I guess. ( since they do not sit at the same angle)

the glass in the passenger side mirror actually fell off after sitting in the sun while i was at work all day . . . . super-glued it back on that night, and it's been doing just fine for over a month now . . . .
just make sure you use glue with cyanoacrylate

The post 85.1 mirrors have two direct drive motors that posistion the mirror. These are connected with very small white nylon gear racks with a ball and socket to the gimballed mirror support frame. The ball breaks off of the end of this link and you get shaky mirrors. These links are only an inch long!

Now the interesting part of this is the mirror transmission (yes that's what it's called) is almost $300 new. But in 99 percent of the cases you only need to replace the 50 cent broken link.

So I find that most late 80's and 90's cars have the same mirror transmissions in them. A trip to a junk yard with your mirror guts in hand to compare with the euro imports and even american cars such as the mustang and you will find a replacement for $10.

Somewhere in some drawer are several bags of these links.

SoCal Driver;

Thanks for the followup even though Magown did the
original post.

Have had to deal with the mirror glass falling off
and the upper mirror detaching from the base, but
never looked too closely at the motor assembly.

It's great to know how it all works in the event
....and you know it will.......the mirror ever goes kaput!

Jiggly,jiggly,jiggly......

Ditto on the super glue (in my case, silicone sealant)

I used 5 minute epoxy on my drivers side mirror after it let go one night- That was weird..

I saw a "tool" to tighten mirrors from the inside without removing anything.. I believe it was in Tweeks..

Yup, my mirror BOUNCED off the blacktop when I shut my door. Glued it back on with 3M super weatherstrip adhesive. It shook like crazy a few days before it actually fell off and I had assumed that the mechanicals in the mirror assembly had broken. oops

Thanks guys, I had a few unexpected things come up today so I couldn't look at it. I'll give it a closer look tomorrow now that I know the skinny.
