What size tire? I have looked into mud-terrain type tires and there are none with a smaller diameter than, say 28". This makes clearance a big issue. Especially if you plan to make a turn once in a while.
There was a time when you could get good off-road tires for even 13" wheels. Those days seem to have gone the way of the, well, the 13" wheel.
Try gravel rally tyres. Like Michelin, Yokohama, Kumho and others.

Thanks for the reply. However, I have multiple sets of rally tires. Michelin, Pirelli, Kumho, Yokohama, Falken, BF Goodrich and even old Goodyears.
The reason I am interested in the off-road tires is that they are significantly less expensive and in some cases can be better in mud or sand than rally tires.
The problem is that they are sized for trucks and don't work well for cars. I do not want to rally a truck.

That is a size that would likely be acceptable. However, that tread pattern is not aggressive enough for my intentions. I'm looking for a tire that will kick *** in mud. I have grooved some of my rally tires and some winter tires for this purpose, but they are still not as good as the dedicated mud-terrain truck tires out there. Which of course are not offered in a smallish size, such as 205/70R15.
Additionally, we had a set of the Geolanders on my x-wife's Jeep. I was not impressed. The Nokians I bought to replace them were far superior in all regards.

Yes, the Kumhos are 28" dia as far as I've found state side and would require major fender rolling/bending/cutting to fit. Will share info on AT tires that fit when I conclude my research.
My 2nd set of Centerline wheels may end up with street tires and I'll consider 14" steel rims for ATs.
on the early 944, the front control arm is shared with the contemporary VW Jetta and other cars.
our front spindles/struts are modified Rabbit parts.
and the 944 rear suspension is more or less straight out of a SUper Beetle.
Notched spring plates are spring plates (metal piece connecting the torsion bar to the trailing arm) with a small notch cut out of them, so that they can travel further without hitting the suspension bolt near the pivot end.
Could u bring regular rabbit spindles to the front of an early 944?
I just wanted to pop a quick post in this thread to say i'm enjoying all the discussion here, as I'm currently starting work on a 924S that I want to tackle some TSD rally with, in the Pacific northwest/southern British Columbia area.
I'm particularily interested in the light truck tire options, as TSD is generally a pretty even mix of gravel, mud, snow and tarmac with long transit stages so a truck tire would be well suited. I'll have to learn for myself what the 924s allows for clearances, but thankfully the aftermarket has plenty of options for 944 style overfenders.
Open question to anyone running aux lighting, does the factory alternator hold up okay to the increased load?
Hey Van - would you mind double checking the size of those Winterforce tires? I'd be interested in knowing if you can fit 205/75s. Those equate to about 27.1" diameter, where as 205/70 will be about 26.3". That is a fairly significant difference.
