Boxster (986) trans in 944 - what's needed?
There's a guy somewhat local parting 10 Boxsters, and I got to thinking about the possibility of a 6 speed from a Boxster S - is there any R&D on the swap? All I could find was info on the Audi 01E 6 speed from the Passat which requires a custom coupler and axles. The 986 S has a Getrag trans, whereas the 5 speeds are Aisins.
Anyone? Bueller?

All the work to make it fit would surely be more than a 968 box. There are many different variations of the 01E, the 968 box is one of them. The 968 also uses different axles, IIRC, as well as other parts.
I would head over to 986 forum and find out what the pattern is on the housing for it, and where the box originates. It may just be an upside down 996 trans, reworked a bit.
Try contacting California Motorsports too. They can probably answer your questions. (No affiliation).
Bueller isn't here. He's out with Sloan and Cameron.

I would love a 968 trans, but they're too expensive for me to install just for upgrade sake. I may be able to snag one of these 986 trannies for cheap.
I believe it is a flipped 996 trans, thanks for the pointers.

The main perk would be the fact that it can take 400+ hp without crapping the bed - and I could get it for $500-600 cash (that's 951 trans money). If it doesn't need an unreasonable amount of modification, this is great alternative to a 5 speed turbo trans (with aging synchros and bearings). Especially for guys with engine swaps and modded turbo engines.
Personally, my NA trans is making noise, and if I end up having to replace it again, I would want to at least get a turbo or S2 box. The 968 box would be great, but is wicked expensive relative to other options.

the BH is similar but not identical to the 944 torque tube.
you would likely need to come up with a custom driveshaft coupler. axles are easy to have shortened/lengthened if needed. mounts should be easy enough too.
bolting to the TT and having the shafts connect are the most important part.
also IIRC the boxster uses a shift cable instead of a rod like the 944.

The guy near Doug/Admiral/me said $600 DELIVERED for a 986S trans with 92,XXX. I bet that has negotiation room... so yes, much cheaper than a 968 trans.
Personally I'm going to hold off until I have some other projects taken care of - the point of this thread was to see if anyone had done it. I'd like to eventually get one and make it work, but it may be 1 year+ from now.

well Michael....
a 6 speed might liven up the car. but, not by much.
however, (when) the moment arrives, we could always store my spare 6-speed over your rear axle.
when you get a minute, give me a call.
