Changing transmission/differential fluid

... is a PITA! First of all, the fill/drain bolts need a 17mm allen wrench, which of course I didn't have. Then the bolts must have been torqued down by an angry gorilla. I had to use a 2-foot extension pipe and a small sledge hammer just to get the drain bolt loose. Now I can't get the filler bolt out because the muffler is in the way. So, I've decided to just leave it empty and drive it the way it is. How long do you think it'll last with no lubrication?

it's fine without fluid, IIRC Porsche had said that your car picks up power without the fluid - and dead weight! You could always torch the exhaust and get a nice stainless .. unless the bolts for some reason come out without any trouble

Oh yeah, with the weight savings of running without the fluid, I bet it's equivalent to adding 15 horsepower! Sweet.
So like, I had to grind about an inch off the allen wrench, and then it cleared the muffler and I was able to get the plug out. Now I just have to figure out how high to fill it up. From what I've found so far, it's either 8mm below the bottom of the fill hole, or all the way up to the bottom of the fill hole?

you're supposed to take the fill plug out FIRST, to make sure you have a way to put fluid in in case you wreck the drain plug. i did mine with exhaust in, of course its not an S2 so my exhaust is a bit smaller. if you get some sort of large fish tank tubing and run it in there to a point outside the car you could pour in the correct amount of fluid with relatively low mess factor.
good luck

p.s. i put my swepco in using the empty old gear lube bottle with fish tank hose extension as a squeeze bottle... wasn't fun but it worked.

You gotta get a proper 17mm allen head socket 1/2" drive. Craftsman has one - Sears.
If it is REALLY seized, try tapping the Fill Plug with a hammer and drift to shock the bolt. Should come out. Worse case, apply heat with a torch VERY CAREFULLY!
Whatever, don't drive it without fluid!

Mine was really easy! I used one of those 17mm Allen drivers, 1/2" drive - bought a cheap set from Autozone. On my 1/2" drive breaker bar (about 1.5' long), those bolts loosened right up. Last change was back in 2000.
Echo: DON'T DRIVE IT WITHOUT FLUID!
I too have no idea how full it's supposed to be, though I think it's 6-8mm below the fill hole. Mine has 2 qts in it now and I need to add more, it's underfilled as is and I can hear louder transmission noises at higher rpms.

The drain plug is a PITA but ,then I used a long clear half inch tube that I ran up to the drivers side fender with a funnel on the end.I used redline ,fill it up till the edgeof the drain hole.good luck

When i tooled around on it, i decided that i'll just take then tranny out again and put it in that way...it saves the time and mess right? It only takes like 20 minutes to get it out right?
There's nothing like finding the hardest way to do something huh?

Pick up one of those suction thingies (new technical term) for about $15. Pour the tranny lube into it, screww the top back on and shoot it in. Porsche did not make this easy, but it's really not that bad on my S2. My car calls for 2.1 liters (about 2.5 qts.).
