Default CV Joint Boot Torn

So I had my car up on a lift and saw this.

I'm probably going to stop driving it until I fix this. What is weird, is that it is not spitting any grease out. Probably because its has been torn for so long that it has no more grease to leak out. I was surprised because I had not noticed any noise from the axle when driving. I will probably rebuild or replace the joint just to be safe, along with the boot.

I was wondering though if that being so close to the exhaust pipe, is what caused it to fail? surely Porsche would have thought of that being an issue and tested it to make sure it wasn't. Any ideas on what made it tear like that?

The joint over the exhaust always cracks/fails first.

The CV joint needs to be replaced, you'll find that the bearing race surfaces are pitted. But, you might as well drive it until either you hear noise or you repair it. The damage is already done.

Search YouTube - I've made videos on CV joints.

For the price of 2 CV joint repair kits I can get an already built axle, but I don't want to have an entire new axle on one side and old on the other. So I will probably replace the one bad CV joint and boot, or replace both axles completely (I know wasteful and unnecessary).

I'm wondering what brand of parts to get though, and were best to buy them from. I'm seeing Loebro/GKN, which is the OEM supplier brand, and "genuine Porsche". So what is the difference between them? are they the same, and one just has an expensive name on it? or is there an actual difference?

I've only used the Loebro/GKN from Pelican... I've just swapped the joints, because that was I can actually see (and be aware) of the wear that's caused... and joint that don't have pitting I can clean up and keep as emergency spares.

Ok so I got the old axle out, took off the joint with the bad boot, disassembled it, and cleaned it. Sure enough several different spots with damage, weird that I never heard any issues. So I greased up the new one and installed it. I put the axle back in and drove it about 20 miles and so far so good.

I followed the clark's garage guide and had a second set of hands help me. It was surprisingly easy and only took about 2 hours. Not bad for my first time doing an axle on any type of car, let alone a brand known to be hard to work on.

Now I just need to install the new ac parts I've had sitting around for 4 months now.

Good to hear. I need to replace a CV boot, and maybe the joint, on my S2.

Between Clark's and Van's excellent videos I'm pretty sure I can tackle this, as long as I don't manage to strip any bolts. I have a triple square socket set I bought from Zim's but this will be the first chance I've had to use them...

I plan to take things apart, clean, inspect, and then order parts as necessary.

Pelican shows the boots for the S2 (and 951) to be a different part number from the 944.

Otherwise, I'd be interested.

I need to get back under the car and pay more attention to the boot, but you can just see it in this picture.

The axle may be thicker, and I think maybe the inside end of the boot may slip over a groove in the shaft like on a 914 in Van's video and not use a band clamp.
