A few years ago I was in Germany visiting with a friend's family. My friend's 80 year old father was trying to get an ancient 8mm movie projector going with little success. While tinkering I heard him mutter under his breath "Scheisse"

To follow up on this, I used a motor out of an audi TT. I had to customize it a bit and it only has one speed, but it's for the race car.

I found some possible candidates by searching on ecstuning.com. Good photos so you can guesstimate compatibility.

Some that look close from Audi/VW and sometimes on special for $40 or so. Might be worth a punt.

I took a gamble, and ordered one for a VW beetle, Jetta, Passat etc. Bolt pattern is the same, spline fits the wiper drive arm, so it' physically fits just fine.
Now I need the find a plug that fits, and figure out the wiring.
Anybody out there better at reading a schematic than I am? (even if I could find one, it's all Greek to me)
If we can find out how to wire these in, at $26 bucks a piece, these seem like a good alternative to $625 one on ebay.

What are the physical differences between the early and late motor assemblies?

...anyone ever notice (before me, just now) that the Wiper motor is essentially the same actual motor as the 944 headlight motor, just with a different wiring plug?

No it's not.

Gear ratio is way different, contact plate in side is different, and I'm pretty sure the power output is way different, but yes, on the outside, it looks remarkably similar except for the **** on the end.

I had similar thoughts, found one for pennies on fleabay, and dissected it only to be disappointed.
