Thumbs down Uh Oh, maybe BIG problem with mom's 84.

OK, got the balance belt on and in-time. I still have a bad vibration from 2600-3000RPMs. Under accelleration, no load, right as the pedal is depressed, there is a knock. It seems to be relative to the engine speed. NOT GOOD!!!!!!! I'm thinking two things, one, (maybe, hopefully, I PRAY!) the dampener on the flywheel(it is an automatic). 2 rod knocking . Any experiecne is greatly appreciated. It's a metalic sounding knock, from the lower rear of the engine. I also notice a slighsmell of hot rubber. Any hope that it could be a motor mount? I'm thinking with the rubber smell, it may be the dampener. Noone has noticed this sound before, I didn't hear it earlier today while I diagnosed it as a balance belt. It also seems to get worse the more I mess with it too,or possibly as it gets hotter. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not looking good at all! I ran it, at an idle in gear, it knocks, slight accelleration, it knock lightly more before dissapearing above abot 1000 RPMs. I put my foot on the exhaust and had my dad run it through the RPM range, at 3k it ismoothes out as far as feeling it through the car, but the vibration through the exhaust keeps getting worse as revs come up. I guess I'll be pulling the oil pan. Hope the crank isn't too bad, not getting my hopes up though.

Good news. getting into it further, it's the dampener on the flywheel. Reasoning...
1 has about 1/4 turn of play in the torque converter
2 doesn't knock under load
3 keeps getting louder the more I mess with it, but the vibration is unchanged
4 pulled the oil filter and there i not even a trace of metal

Makes a ton of noise, but the guess is that it's just a torn rubber dampener. WOW, this should be fun, ugh. Not as life threatening as the rod bearings though, I'll take it and stride.

Yeah, I had it wrote off as the rod bearing becase the headgaket was blown when we got it plus the metalic knock at the bottom rear of the motor. My first thought was the dampener, should have just stuck to it. I like to update my posts, some people like to read the whole story for info. Sometimes people bring a thread back from 10 pages back to find out what "it" ended up being. Just sharing the experience, sometimes it counts.

Yeah, I thought of that, Hmm, no need to blow mom's car up being a prototype. It would be cool tho, I wonder if it would lift the front wheels before the tranny blew. Probably just juice the ring and pinion gears before it even moved.

Andy- I wish I had seen this earlier- Sounds like the infamous "Auto Flex Damper" 700$ for the part if you shop it out. I got mine from Vertex- about 12 hours of labor.

Look in the inspection hole by the starter- you should see small chunks of burned rubber if it's the flex disk.
When mine went I freaked- it sounded like a can of bolts shaking around..

Luckily mine went in my driveway while backing out!!

Mom's went about a block from home, it didn't make noise at first, just a vibration. I didn't see any rubber in the hole but couldn't get a good look.
