I'm thinking 20-50, but see other weights mentioned (0-50, etc). I think it depends on where you live and your yearly climate.

Porsche recommends Mobil1 0W-40. Might not be the best available, but I figure it can't be a bad decision to do what the factory recommends.

Look at Mobil V-Twin if you want a high zinc and phosphorus level 20W50. Or go Mobil 5W50.

I use Brad Penn 20w50 in my 86' in Colorado. Porsche says that weight is good to 14*. I only drive it above freezing anyways.

Same. Mobil 1 10w40 year round.

It's so debated that I am starting to believe it really doesn't matter as long as you pick something within a decent range of viscosity for your climate.

Redline 5w50 ester

A little pricey, but it's some of the best quality oil you can buy.

I think the brand is negligible as long as you keep up to date on your oil changes. Running too long without changing oil will have a much larger affect on your engine than running a different brand oil. Am I crazy for thinking this?

The base stock composition and additive packages vary significantly between oils. For example, Castrol 5w30 shears down much more rapidly than their 0w40 blend because it's a different base stock composition. M1 VTwin has a much higher ZDDP than their normal oils, etc.

HTHS is also critical - Castrol won't even publish their figures on the majority of their oils, but the higher-end vendors like Amsoil and Redline consistently have high HTHS viscosities. You want this, because the additive polymers tend to break down in high temp/high shear, and you lose viscosity and detergent properties. HTHS viscosity gives a good index of the tendency for this to occur.

Tl;dr it's not super important if you change your oil religiously, but if you're serious about your car, don't run crappy oil in it.

But yeah, the oil topics have been beaten to death. There are a million threads out there already
