Default 88 High Compression Motor Questions

I may be looking at an 88 924S parts car. My question is, if the build date is a late 87 sold as a MY88, when did they start using the high comp motor and DME?

Did some searching here can't really find info. Any chance a late month 87 would be the high comp? Anyone know what month/year they started?

Have not looked at the car yet to get the build date, should be getting a picture later. This may not even be an issue for me but would like to know in advance.

TIA

Pretty sure both 924/944 in 88 were high-compression.

Yeah for sure 944/924S in 1988 had the high comp motor. Just trying to figure out exactly where the break is, what month of what year.

And according to the link above, the 1987 944 had a high comp motor but not a 1987 924S. That doesn't seem right? I didnt think any 1987 was high comp...

Any chance you can get an engine code from the 924s? VIN?

I would imagine it has a high comp motor since it was sold as an MY88. I have a MY89 that was built in late 88 with the 2.7. I don't know for sure but I would say all MY88 would be high comp since that's what the factory put out.

Yeah i should be getting a picture of the option codes which lists the chassis # and I can go on that. Will also get the date stamp from the ID sticker.

Also look at the engine block number, which is by the #4 exhaust header.

If it is a M44/09 engine it will be high (10.2) compression.

What a lot of people do not realize about the US 924S is that it actually has more power than the US 944 engine. The factory detuned the 944 Euro engine for the 924S from 10.6cr to 9.7cr, which meant the Euro 944 was the faster car. But the same 9.7cr 924S was sold in the US alongside the lower compression 9.5cr 944, making the 924S the more powerful car from 1986 to 1987.

944 143bhp 186tq
944S 150hp 190tq

In 88 everything was standardized between the 944/924S models (10.2cr) but the factory still quoted the 924S with an extra 4tq probably because of the different chip in there.

Hope that helps, either way win-win!

Got a look at the ID sticker, its a mid year 88 JN451077. High comp motor and QK short trans... thought I may have gotten really lucky an LSD but not so much.

Thanks all.

Hi Will. If your user name is your actual name I wonder if we are related.
