Thumbs down Door Handle Problem

On my 84 944, the outer door handle button pulled in, but the door never opened. IS there a conneciton on the inside of the door I can check or should I just order a new handle now? This really sucks having to get in the passenger side!

Unfortunately the handle tends to be the part that breaks. There are write ups on how to get the door handle out to look at it and its not really that hard to get it loose enough to peek behind it to see where the broken part may be. Its kind of a pain to get the handle assembly all the way out. Just do a search on door handle replacement.

could this be a fix for it?

I haven't seen a door handle other than ebay for under $114!

When this happens, it is usually the handle itself that is broken, and needs to be replaced. Try to find a good used one, and replace the handle. All will be well.

That link doesn't work for me...

What you need is a little acuator for the door. It connects the door level to the latch mechanism.

I got a replacement on Ebay for pretty cheap. Actually, I found it on Ebay then I called the company that had the auction and bought it cheaper because I pretended I didn' tknow about the auction.

If you do some searching you will find a bunch of posts that I made back in Febuary sometime I believe.

well, I'm looking at changing to the 968 dooor handles if I'm going to pay that much anyways. The lock cylinder (I"m assuming) isn't the problem, so thats only $165 to do that way from Sunset Porsche @ 800-346-0182 from a thread I was reading before. The part I was looking at was an aftermarket linkage, but I'm not sure where it goes on the mechanism.

Question 2: is this somehting a simple tack weld may fix?

Ok, that part WILL fix your problem. That is the part I bought. If you call them you can save a couple bucks too.

Back when I replaced mine, someone posted a diagram of the door handle mechanism so you can easily see what needed replaced. All you have to do is take the door panel off which is easy and take the part of and put the new one on. It was hard for me because it was about 15 degrees out when I did mine.

Unless they've gone up dramatically just now, if you have the early style doorhandle, a new unit should not exceed $70. I've never seen the door actuators available separately, but if they are, they might fix your handle. Mine broke at the metal linkage and I was forced to replace the whole thing.

Manning has a drivers side door handle for sale in the classifieds under "Assorted 944/924S parts".

Hey Manning do I get a commission if you sell?

Maybe, but if it doesn't sell I'll send the monkey after you.

I do have one drivers side off of an 86. It has the word PORSCHE embossed on it. It look to be in very good shape.

RMills944,

Likely the part that broke is cast, brittle and tiny, not a good welding candidate.

New door handles are a simple fix if you don't mind a separate key for that door. If you need more info about fixing the problem call me at 1-800-741-5252
