Default Would I be a sellout for getting a swapped 944?

Ever since my garage fire I have been itching to get a "fun car" again. I haven't really looked at anything in person yet, but I have this sort of virus where I just can't get away from the 924/944/968 series. I know I'm not the only one here.

I have had a 924S, and a 944 Turbo. I liked both. I really liked my 944 Turbo. After everything was complete the car ran great, and handled pretty well too. I recently started thinking about getting another Miata to replace the one that got torched. They are a fun car and the droptop my wife loved as well. I'm thinking of getting back into a 944. There is one I just found that a swapped LT1 in the engine bay with about 340 WHP. I figure that should make for a very very fun car. My 951 had about 250 WHP and it moved out pretty well can't imagine another 90 HP. A few of the other cars I have thought about are: MR2's, possibly a new mustang, and a few others.

I just don't know how I feel driving a V8 swapped 944. I was curious on opinions of the guys who have swapped for a V8. Do you like it? How is it to work on when stuff does break? How are the vibrations from the engine in the cabin?

I'm guessing you will dearly miss the turbo experience, the satisfaction of boost. 90 hp won't bring it back.

boost the LT1, problem solved

the big motors bring much-needed low-end grunt to these cars, which would be a welcome addition for anyone who DDs

I really liked the Turbo. I'm a 2 stroke nut. So the lacking in low end torque is nothing new to me. Haha. Its all about that high end kick.

I don't think you're selling out by getting a V8... but in the 350rwhp range, you're definitely in the horsepower range that a modified 951 engine can reach. That's about where mine is at now... and I'll be putting it up for sale in the next few months! (wink wink, nudge nudge)

Garage fire?

.... quick search ....

Holy crap!

As for the "swap"... if you're going to commit blasphemy like that - might as well go all the way. Forget the LT1... find one that's got an LS instead.

I usually troll people about LS engines talking about the LTx. The engine was pretty advanced and for the most part pretty stout. The only thing bad about it IMO is lack of COP and the damn optispark. Other than that they handle boost rather well, and it should have enough power for me.

Guy said the car makes 340 WHP has the bigger radiator to keep it cool, and a slight cam with ported trickflow heads.

I used to be a little bit heavier into the GM stuff (dad was a GM Technician for a very long time, and helped a friend found a LTx/LSx performance company)... the LT isn't a "bad" motor. It's just NOT an LS, that's all. The LS was pretty revolutionary when it came out.

I don't see what is so revolutionary about it in all honesty. GM copied the port design from Ford Big Blocks, and coil near plug was already being used on production vehicles. I don't really understand how it gets so much better mileage than the LTx engines. That is impressive. Being able to get 28 MPG in a corvette with a LS1 6 speed.

Now the 4.0 DOHC motor from Lexus is a whole different beast. I wouldn't mind having that small V8 in the 944. Something that has a potential to rev high and put out decent numbers sounds like fun.

It'll get more than 28. My old Z06 (LS6) did 32 if I drove it lightly enough.

I was working for a diesel engine manufacturer at the time the LS was released. Our CIC team (Competitive Intelligence) got their hands on a couple and had it cut up 100 different ways. Everyone was VERY interested in it. All aluminum, high output, excellent fuel economy. It was the first ground-up V8 design since they designed the smallblock back in the 50s IIRC.

Really the only thing I see wrong in this instance is not really knowing how well the swap was done. For all you know it could have been cobbled together under a tarp by billy bob using an engine he got from a junkyard camaro.

Buying pre-modded cars always worries me a bit
