951 vs 968 weight
What accounts for the weight difference between a 951 and a 968?
Something real like air bags and door beams?
Is it a new method of measuring/calculating?
More sound deadening material?
Magazine marketing noise?

968 has more options in general. All the little things like extra door panel trim, extra sound insulation, mass balances... two headlight motores instead of one.. etc.

Ok, that makes sense.
So there is definitely extra sound insulation?
What are you referring to with respect to mass balances? Are these cars "corner balanced" with weights like the old school 911s?

Mass balance = vibrations dampeners. Aka heavy rubber weights. They are hidden under the carpet in the rear cubbies.
That said, a nonairbag 968 clubsport is probably lighter than a us spec full load 89 turbo s.

I can't find any mass balances in the rear of my 968.
The extra cam and associated head material, etc., surely adds a few lbs. The clutch is also heavier. The interior stuff is still pretty thin/light/flimsy, doubt there's a big weight difference there. Rear seats are probably lighter.
Slightly bigger sway bars might add just a little weight.
The 6spd gearbox may be heavier, I don't know.

Let's see..
3.0 crank
16 valve head with dual cams as noted
Dual mass flywheel
6 speed
Longer front section/nose
Dual power headlight motors as noted
Standard swaybars are similar to 951S
The rear vibration damper was only in cabs to cancel oscillations and vibrations. It will not be found in coupes.

my '92 968 had a large rubber mat attached to the inside of the rear fender/ rear wheel well cubby storage area. It was about 6"x6" in size IIRC.
I can only assume it is sound deadening/vibration deadening.
All the 968s were built in Stuttgart vs the vast majority of 951s being built in Nekarsulm. I think the Stuttgart factory was far more liberal in it's use of glue and insulation based on my experience stripping both generations of the cars.

Having removed the six speed transaxle in favour of a turbo five speed my back says the five speed is a least thirty pounds lighter.
