kitchen sink found in 951 engine bay!!
porsche really did throw everything they possibly could into the engine bay of the 951! this has to be the worst engine ever to work on - just the airbox alone, to get the AFM out, is way over complicated. their goal must have been 'you need to remove 20 things to access 1' - "no one will ever want to work on this!!" <evil laugh>
how do you DIYers manage it? Valium, Xanax, anti-depressants...?

the Good:
how about a legit powerplant option that's not from GM?
the Bad: God that engine sounds like dog**** - and only 2 and a half liters.

Beer fridge for the win, unless I am pulling the turbo or replacing the clutch, and in that case I need to head to the scotch cabinet.......
K&N filter on the 951, I don't know if there have been any dyno tests, but I am willing to bet the filter causes a power loss. The factory system brings in cold air, the K&N open filter sucks in hot air coming off of the intercooler and radiator. Even if it makes the engine bay slightly easier to work in, it is still a bad idea.

Actually its not that bad.
On my 93 Passat, the motor mounts must be unbolted and the engine lifted to remove one of the control arm bolts.
The airbox is way worse than a 951, even to change the filter.
I wont even go into the whole cam chains, tensioners, pads, etc. Especially since to do the lower one requires the transmission come out.
And if you want real fun, try working on a Boxster....

i'd wind up too drunk to put everything back together...
guess i'm just getting old.
A breeze? No way. My 95.5 Audi S6 was a breeze compared to this thing. all BMWs were easier - even S14 and S38 powerplants.
agreed. i will probably go this route just for the simplicity. tell me why it makes sense for the 2 front bolts of the bottom of the air box to be open (slip) brackets, yet the rear bracket is closed with minimal access due to the location of the AFM? just make all three slip types. they never heard of clips for the air box?
owned one. honestly thought it was easier, but my memory could be wearing rosy colored glasses.

New cars suck for working on, but the 951 is no picnic. I'll take a 90s honda/acura to work on any day over a P-car. Driving, that's a different story.
Speaking of engines, I haven't even seen the engine in my Cayman yet. I should probably check and make sure it's there.

951's....easy peasy.
I spent a day replacing just the coolant reservoir on my 996 and don't get me started on spark plugs and coil packs on that car.
