Default Turbo Engine Carnage... How the F*** does this happen?!

A buddy gave me a turbo not-quite-longblock that had supposedly had a #2 failure. Tore it down some today to inspect the damage.

To my surprise, there was no bearing issue whatsoever. Sure, all the bearings looked a little tired, but they were there in their correct positions not creating any drag.

What I did pull out was this:

How the hell do you bend a FORGED RARST rod like that?

You should see the scoring on that cylinder wall forgot to snap a pic, will do if anyone is interested.

Any thoughts on the cause?

Any thoughts on other damage that I may not be seeing?

Hydrolock is one way to do that.

That was my first theory once I found that there was no bearing issue. I've heard of blowing injectors and hydrolocking for a split second until the plug fires. Not on these cars, though... Huh, what a weird scenario.

Detonation?! good time to upgrade to a set of H-beam connecting rods, assuming the block is still usable.

Was there any fuel in that cylinder? From a leak somewhere? It's not my idea but it's a good one. Take a look at this thread... http://ls1tech.com/forums/generation...cting-rod.html

Same issues, hydrolocking, but in a very interesting way...almost...a mystery.

Haha I know nothing about the history of this engine. Interesting theories though. Turns out the piston that was connected to that rod is completely fine. Crazy.

If the piston is fine, where did the scoring in that cylinder come from ?

Well yeah, the piston a a bit scratched up on one side. What I was saying is that the piston is not bent/cracked/out of true. It spec'd out nicely - as did all the others.

I probably would but I believe the car was totaled long ago. Hehe.

Btw I'm awaiting details on the LS7 968 with that 993 front end graft it will be one hell of a car. Mmmm...

I have a forged rod like that. I don't know the exact history of the engine either. It was either driven through a big puddle or had a head gasket failure, or possibly overheated.
