Default Best use of AC?

What's the best practice for air conditioning use in the 944?.... start car first, then put on AC after it warms up, or just leave AC button in on position all the time during hot weather?

Got my AC working about 2 years ago with lots of replacement parts and a great mechanic.

I only use it on longer rides....I find it generally under powered (compared say to our Touareg) so if I am just running in to Town the car won't cool off enough to bother. But if I am taking a 30min ride...it's great!

Therefore mine stays in the "OFF" position unless I choose to use it.

Not sure it matters re: warming up the car....but why keep it on unless you really need it....it robs you of power that in a 944...you can't afford to lose !

Open the windows a bit. Start the car with AC off. It's just one more thing to drag on the engine while starting. Once engine is going smoothly, then turn it on if you like.

They are small systems. They work ok at best sometimes. Best way is as above as you dont need any power reductions . Start and run and they turn on. My 951 is better as a 3 season car from about October to May here .

I changed to R134 while chasing a leak-down. The system works great now and I think a bit cooler than before. I would caution going to high initially since you stand the chance on hot, humid days of the system icing up. I don't recommend starting the car with the a/c engaged, either. Too much load on the electric system. Engine first, a/c second. Running the a/c in recirculating mode after the car begins to cool off will make it more effective since it uses the cooler air from inside the car vs the hotter air from outside.

sorry to misdirect the thread, but what price can you usually find 30lbs of r134a for? I went to a local parts store just looking around and they have 30lbs for 99 bucks. I did the math, that is the equivalent of $2.50 per 12oz can of the same thing. I think I may join that bandwagon.
