If I had to guess, I would say fuel filter. (Not 944)

Are both ends threaded?

It sorta looks like a fuel damper but its the wrong shape for an 8v 944 and the fittings don't look right.

Both ends are threaded, the side with the larger threads has a small hole up top and bottom small threads looks for mounting or for maybe a wire placement. I've seen this before but I can't remember what for.

I think its an oil pressure sending unit, found a volvo one that looks very close.

Ah Now I know where I saw it... its a Oil Pressure Sensor for aftermarket gauges. Autometer uses one lists for $40 and Sunpro uses a simular one for around $20
