Yeah, I get your point about modding cars. However, what about a car that came stock from the factory, received substantial performance mods and has a race history, like the SCCA D Production 924s from the late 70's? They are worth far more than a stock 924 will ever be.

In my experience, you also never make back what you put into a restoration. Does this mean you shouldn't restore a car.

To me a car is just something you have to have to get around in the modern world. The fact that I choose to drive a Porsche is because I want to enjoy getting around. Nothing physical in this world is so precious that it must escape being modified, corrected or updated, except (all) life that is.

No no, not regular Escorts, the Escort RS Cosworth is a fire breathing bad *** from the factory, with up to 400hp and all wheel drive.

And you all got the Audi RS2 Avant (a collaborative effort with Porsche no less) as well as the RS4.

Heck, we don't even get the Golf VR6 4Motion.

We get nothing like that over here.

And how come you all don't consider yourselves European? Kind of like how the Irish don't consider themselves part of the UK huh?

Why??????????????

I'll tell you... (swelling music commences, lots of richly orchestrated strings)

Why do birds suddenly appear, every time my Porsche is near?

Just like me, they long to be,

driving it--- ZOOOOOOOOOM!

Why do clouds, way up in the sky,

seem to part, when I drive by?

Just like me, they long to be,

driving it---- ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Ya, ya ya ya ya, Driving it... zoooooooooom.

(bridge)

On the day my Porsche was built, the angels got together,

and decided to create a dream come true.

So they poured aluminum in a mold, galvanized the shell and painted it DiamanteBleu! (doodley-do)

That is why, all the performance shops in town,

like to have. Me. Around!

Just like me, they long to be

Modding it. ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

IMHO,

The "Poor-man's" Porsche was MADE for people like those found here. Those people who "MOD" and "tweak" and swap whatever they heck 968 engine they want to swap into their '44.

It's not a hot rod, but DEFINATELY didn't come out of the factory with the full potential it has because they didn't want to eat away from the 911 market (which they end up doing anyway). So they sell it at 75% potential, letting the rich and famous drive it just because it's a "Porsche" and when they get tired of the color they sell them and eventually poor people like us pick them up for cheap and turn them into what they should have been coming off the assembly line.

I think the David has two arms, and based on what an ex girlfriend that named her son David told me, a very impressive Three Legs!!! - But that was before she met me

I'm inclined to agree with Adrian. Last year I needed an exhaust for my RX-7 convert. I went to a speed shop that raced RX's. He told me to put on a Borla. As we were talking, I asked him what other mods to make. After a while I said "will that make my car go like a Boxster?" He told me if I wanted the car to do that I would have to start with a different car.

Over the last 25 years I've put way over $20K into my Firebird Convert. It's worth about $10K, and ready for another restoration. That works out to about $2 a mile. Is it worth it? NO! Was it a mistake? NO! Would I ever do it again? NO!

Enough rambling, hit the send button

Adrian Jaye,
Definitly made some good points. And I can't speak for anyone else but I'm not offended. I think a lot of people who buy these cars expect them to go a little faster than they do and don't discover this until after they made the purchase. By that time they've already sunk a grip of cash into normal wear items; control arms, water pumps, injectors, whatever... It would be a total loss to sell now and move up so It's better to look at upgrading the components.

Kinda strange that control arms and water pumps are normal wear items...

Like Tabor, I plan to do a 968 into a 944 someday (he's a lot further along; I'm saving it for a retirement project in ~3-4 yrs.).

Why? Many reasons...
A) I like the styling of the post '85.5 944 na best of all of them (or any other car), but I'd like a little more grunt (had an '88 na for 6 yrs.). Even tho' I own a 968, I still like the looks of the '44 better. Don't want the potential hassles of a turbo. Figure the bigger engine / lighter body should haul ash... project cost should be less than buying a good 968, but it's not a $$$ thing.

B) I like to tinker. The first engine swap I was ever involved in (as a gofer & fascinated observer) was ~35 years ago, a mid-'50's 354 hemi into a '55 Plymouth Business Coupe, with a '55 Dodge front clip (drag car).

C) Everybody's gotta do something....

Of course, there's always the old saying "There's a fine line between a hobby & a mental illness."

Jim, digesting pizza, gone out to watch the ISS go over, and wave to astro & cosmonauts, and my tax dollars....

Hey adrian no offence but just face it man....you drive a pretty fing slow *** porsche! And you have it better than a lot of us. Again no offence to anyone but i didn't by this car because it was a "porsche", screw what it says on the front. Granted there are a lot of cars out there that have crappy mods on them. A lot of civics that have body kits but a 1.2 litre engine.

Its a fact that porsche made a friggin minivan. A 16 second porsche?cmon.....a lot of new 911 owners dont even look at us a porsche drivers. I bought this car becayse i LOVE the way it looks, feels and sounds. But i am not living in some fantasy world that makes it FAST just because its a porsche. Its a very fun car to drive, but i'd love to have 300bhp in it. I agree that the chevy conversion is a little much. I mean EVERYTHING in the car has to be changed....

but when i see a nice modded 951 like turbo tim, or a 968 turbo i have great respect for those cars, just like when i see a nissan 240 or a skyline or a silvia, or acura integra i have respect. EVEN THOUGH IT DOESN'T say porsche.

Alot of boxter and 911 owners buy their cars because they can, so that poeple will see the "porsche" and poeple like you will be impressed. But real enthusiast buy 911s and they do make mods and conversions to them.

I have a feeling you bought the car because it says "PORSCHE" and you want people to see that. When kids at school ask what i drive because they heard its a porsche i answer with "ford escort" cuz i dont give what people think of my car, i love it.

I respect cars that are finely engineered as you said you do too. Yes porsche is an amazing company with a great history and great cars BUT if i see a chevy, or a ford, or even a minivan blow by a 911, i will have respect for the minivan, no matter what make or model.

The real reason is just because it can be done. The other day sat the Brumos Porsche show there was a guy that had put a Toyota 6 cylinder engine in an old VW bus. Go figure.
