one of the main reason's also wanted a real sports car. choices were BM/SAAB/TVR
BM cab's too common
SAAB cab's are great but look too square
TVR's, bad build quality and lot's of serviceing
PORSCHE say's it all
I respect cars that are finely engineered as you said you do too. Yes porsche is an amazing company with a great history and great cars BUT if i see a chevy, or a ford, or even a minivan blow by a 911, i will have respect for the minivan, no matter what make or model.

Just wonder...was it there already when the Chevrolet Brothers started with hod-rodding T Fords way back when...
Just adding to confusion

Why ask Why??????,
I prefer the 944 body style, and i've spent less on converting every component in the car to 968 than I would have spent on buying a low end 968, including labor and purchase of the 944. Not to mention I only pay 944 insurance and not the higher 968 rates.
As for the Horse and antler badge,
Status is nothing.

ok one line of argument is that,
I want to/can I convert my 44 into a 68.
so.....
I've had to use uk prices converted to Dollars.
so here are some examples.
The ones quoted "arent" cheap so would assume there not dog's also millage is same
944 Cab 92...$22k
944 S2 93...$19k
968 Cab 93...$25k
968 C.S 93...$22k
So...if your buying an s2 for 19, why not save another 3g's and buy a 68.
OR if you already have a cab, with fsh, not messed with, VGC. sell it stick another couple of grand on and buy a 68.
Damn it's only simple economics.
Plus you'll have an orginal car with a better resale value, unless of course buying 20'g's worth of car and loosing more than half does'nt bother yal
Status is everything, but common sense is !

I haven't spent near any of those amounts you mentioned yet, and i'm about done with the project. You said it's "simple economics", but I'm saving money over the cost of buying a 968, period. Are you saying It's Better to spend more and get the same result or even less? If someone was really concerned about economics, a Porsche would not be their mode of transport, perhaps a bicycle or they could ride a buss. People concerned with resale value should buy land. Cars, unless they are very rare, always depreciate. Also, I will not be paying more insurance for the modifications done to my car. That information is directly from my insurance company. So, my common sense isn't lacking. When you get down to it, I'm building the car I want, and enjoying it in the process. As for butchering my car, Is a sergeon a butcher for replacing a weak organ with a stronger one?

944S-owning old hot rodder here:
('37 Chevy coupe with six Stromberg 97's; '50 Chevy ragtop stovebolt cruiser, nosed, decked, frenched, baby moons, lakes, 356C seats (really!); '47 Chevy Fleetline fastback, same treatment; '30 Model A Tudor with Arden OHV conversion, etc.)
But my most rewarding projects involved transforming undertuned lumps and chassis: a '58 Morris Minor 1000 with a 1275cc BMC pushed to the limit that handled; a '63 1800S with a 2.3 liter Volvo engine done correctly with giant valves (2" Chevy), big DCOE's, 11:2cr, Isky cam, koni's, springs and all sorts of R-sport stuff. This car would do (and did) circles around most cars on the road. I took perverse pleasure in making a Volvo wild...
But that's history. Maybe it's a sign of age, but I have zero interest in tweaking my 944S. It is what it is - a well balanced, tight, well-performing car that is a pleasure to drive slow or fast. I would not call the 944's undertuned, but they are relatively unstressed, which accounts for two things: 1) their relative reliability; and 2) their tuning potential. Both of these things are good, depending upon your position, and neither position is incorrect.
But for me? Chips? No. Exhaust? No. Do I wish it had more grunt? No. Do I wish it went faster? No. And I'm even happy with the 15" phonedials. I just wish it would stop stalling, but I think we've figured that out, thanks to this forum.
Having been there, I'm not knocking fiddling with 924's or 944's, or anything else. To each their own.
The 944's are good cars as they are, and honestly, if I wanted something more or something different I'd find a way to trade up rather than fiddle down.

Adrian is missing the fact that in a lot of parts of the US we are not as limited or governed regarding what we do to our cars and what we have to report to the insurance company. In the UK, he has to let the insurance company know when he farts in the car so that they change his policy. He also has to fix every last thing on his car before MOT will update his registration.

In '81 I bought a '77 celica liftback automatic with 22k. I hated the fact it was an auto but the car was too clean.
I put in adco sway bars with urethane bushings, bilsteins, and phoenix stahflex tires (rated #1 in road & track's test).
The car looked bone stock, but killed my buddie's 81ZX in the turns (just the turns).
My neighbor bought a brand new '83 RX-7 auto. He let me take it for a 15 mile test drive on the local streets, not pushing it.
When I got home I realized the RX-7 did everything the celica did only better. I was hooked, and got an RX-7 as soon as I graduated college in '83.
I believe some minor tweaks are nice. However, the factory does it better than any individual can do it.

i beg to differ with that last line. it may be true in the case of porsche, but if you are talking about just about any mass market car i would say the factory definately does not do anything best.
take a bunch of pretty good engineers and then filter thier work through a bunch of bad managers who think they know how to engineer, let a bunch of idiots in marketing redesign everything because some market research suggests that .01% more customers will be interested in the car if only they destroy the arodynamics and handling with stupid aesthetic modifications. then let a bunch of corporate lawyers tear the design apart for any way that the dumbest person imaginable could hurt himself. add about 800 pounds of "luxury features" and then you have the standard american car as it comes from "the factory".
no thanks, i could do a better job myself because i'm not trying to make something idoit proof and with appeal to 5 key demographic groups.
Ben.
