I just got a Nikon Coolpix 775. Awsome camera. You can find them for about $350. 2.1 megapixl (the 785 is 3.1... but you will almost always reduce the quality to post on the web.. so I did not see the need for the extra expense.)
In high def and large size it takes excellent quality pics. It will also do silent movies (15sec quicktime on 32 meg card). You can get some massive flash cards for it for less than 100 bones. Ebay has a few on there now.

I picked up a <a href="http://www.kodak.com/cgi-bin/webCatalog.pl?section=&cc=US&lc=en&product=KODAK+DX3500+Digital+Camera" target="_blank">Kodak DX3500</a> 2.2 megapixel camera for $180 from circuit city as a display model. It is pretty decent, takes good pictures, has nice features, was fairly cheap, and can be upgraded to hold 100's of pictures. You can pick them up for around the same price over the web if you shop around (<a href="http://www.pricewatch.com" target="_blank">pricewatch</a> is a good place to look).

I have Olympus C-700
Great for track photos b/c 10x optical zoom.
shoots .mov movies with sound, and can record 5 sec Wav-file with each photo. Very happy with that.

I use a Nikon Coolpix 885. Can't say enough about it for what my needs are. I take it skiing and therefore needed something small. For its size, "there's no substitute"
. The camera used for the picture on the link below is a Kodak 280. It is 2.1 megapixel and took great pictures except the macro feature sucked. The new Nikon 885 is 3.4 Megapixel and allows macro as close as 2 inches. The link below is a modification of the original Kodak image to make it smaller. I can email a picture representative of the Nikon's quality if you want. Let me know.

I like the <a href="http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/G1/index.html" target="_blank">Canon Powershot G1</a>. Here's the <a href="http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/pdf/g1/g1_bro.pdf" target="_blank">brochure</a>. Aside the from usual mid-range features of 3.3megapixels, 7-21mm lens, etc., it has the following pro-photographer features that set is apart from other comparable point&shoot models:
Here are some <a href="http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/G1/sample.html" target="_blank">sample images.</a>
- wireless remote for convenience
- pivoting LCD viewer for taking awkward shots (overhead, around-corner, bent-over, etc.)
- SLR hot-shoe for a variety of additional flash options
- includes both aperture and shutter-priority exposure modes for real photographers
- Type-II CompactFlash memory has much wider range of expansion than SmartMedia or Sony MemoryStick, it can also use the IBM MicroDrive line of memory cards for up to 1GB of storage (16x the limit of the others)
- bundled with Adobe Photoshop LE.

Olypus Camedia D100, was about $300 when I picked it up a year ago, now they are about $159, great bargain..
I'm pretty rough on a camera, and it has held up great. Battery life is excellent.
It has a 1.5 in LCD display (in color) and a veiwfinder.
Comes with software, and is a snap to use.
Simply attach the USB plug, click "my computer" and you'll see an additional drive avaliable, called "E" drive "removable disc" click the icon and there's your pics....

Sony Mavica FD87, probably a piece of crap compared to most of this stuff, but works great for me. Best res is 1285xsomething, and does up to 60 sec vid onto 3.5" floppy disk. I take it to PCA D/E's at mid-ohio that I'm not running in and go up in the start finish tower..filming waterboys going thru the carousel and thru the start/finish line, sound and all, then I leave the disk in their car for free, with a note, "compliments of the MOR PCA" The guys love it, they have a memento .mpg of them on the track, sometimes passing a 911 or M3 or something. If I get bored and run out of waterboys, I may film a 911 or boxter or something. I'm yet to capture a spin, that would be worth some $$$!! Anyway, if your digicam can't go directly to a floppy, you either need a laptop or collect e-mail addresses if you want to play the share game. You guys all know how much I like to "share"

I am Using the Sony CyberShot 707 5.4 MP Camera!! Cost just for cam 1k, this doesnt include $600 in memsticks. Though I use it for much more than taking pics to post on this site I COMPLETELY RECOMEND this camera for the amatuer photographer..Best camera I have ever owned. I also use the 1280 epson printer and can get the most awesome 13X19 prints that I have ever seen. Photo quality no question.

Fuji Finepix 4900Zoom. The new replacement model is the 6900Zoom. Both are AWESOME cameras, and I've owned my fair share of Kodak and Olympus cameras in the past.
All of the photos on <a href="http://www.rints.com/hammond/turbo.html" target="_blank">The Great Rebuild</a> site were taken with this camera, and sized-down to Web-friendly size.

My family (well my brother got it for his birthday but its the family camera) just got a nikon coolpix 885. It's a sweet camera...I snapped pics in full darkness, no light at all in the garage with the flash on and it came out crystal clear...as if it was full daylight outside. Picture quality is excellent...only complaint would be battery life...I'm not sure if its average/below average or what. After like 70 pics, the battery low indicator came on.
It's $399 + AC adapter, rechargable battery and more compact flash.
