With regaurds to my other post "the big plan" how is it that you all afored your Porsche addiction. I am in collage right now, but have no plans in getting a job that will use my degree. I truely have no idea what I want to do after school. Maybe AirForce reserves, open a speed shop with my other car friends, find some bs that I hate but makes good money, scuba instructor. Yeah right like any of these are even worth giving a second thought. Well right now I am rapidy spending my savings that I made with a great job I had in high school.(One of those .coms that is no longer around. Man I need a job!

Money! Why do you think my sig says '84 944 NA! If I had money, it would say '89 951, '93 968 cab, or '94 928 GTS; in that order.

I think a simple "porsche addiction" is not expensive. An addiction to modifying/tuning/tweaking a porsche is. I bought my (NA, bare stock) 944 because it drives like a 944. I can't think of another car that drives better right out of the box, for the $.

I guess I'm bucking the trend here on the list by not wanting to tweak the bejeezus out of my car and see what kind of HP I can send to the back wheels. I enjoy driving 944s, and other cars. It's not expensive to own and maintain one if you're smart about it, and invest some time/brains/caring.

Sure there are 951s that are a heck of a lot faster than my car, there are also camaros, corvettes, and mustangs that are a lot faster. I LOVE driving 944s because of the whole experience, it's the most wonderful feeling in the world. I've discarded all of the car ego and desire for flashyness a long time ago, which is where 50% of the $$$ in cars ends up, it seems.

I don't mean any disrespect to anyone that has put thousands of $ into tuning a car, or making it the way you want it, if that's what you love, that's AWESOME. But if you're just starting out, or don't have the cash to buy a new thingamabob for that extra 5HP, enjoy the car for what it is: something to drive.

Just my thought on the issue.

DangerZero I am 100% with you on that one. I bought my car for 3k. Replaced a battery, dash board lights, sorted out all of the electrical, and will now rebuild one of my calipers, oh yeah and the timing belt was done 3 weeks ago. Other than that, the car runs perfect!! I like the way it sounds, I like the stance, just not the shiny vinyl that they used on the dashboard, too bright.
My insurance is already high, so by me upgrading it, I would have another ticket and spend more money on insurance, But hey.... I kicked that ricers A@@. I am really getting sick of people driving like they are in some sort of race: downshifting, power breaking during TRAFFIC. Also have you noticed, they only get maybe 2-3 cars ahead of you?

I THINK YOU ALL MISSED MY POINT. I know all about enjoying these cars cheaply. When I was 15 I bought my first car. An 86 Honda civic Wagovan . I riced it out than turned 16, felt how slow it was and sold it for a White 86 924. I drove this a for a while, then wanted little more power, so I bought a 944 parts car that had a good engine. I planed to transplant the 944 engine into the 924. About that time I had a 944 with a bad engine fall into my lap. I bought it and sold the 924. I rebuilt the engine out of the parts car and put it in the 944. I ran that engine for a while, and spun the #2 rod bearing. When that happened I rebuilt the motor that original came with that car and dropped that in. During this time I also bought one of my dads Jaguar XJSs that we had rebuilt together. When I left for collage I sold my XJS. On my way home from school for Christmas break I hit some black ice, a guardrail and another car. This accident was probably the biggest turning point in my life. I saw the ice. I slowed as much as I could before I reached it. I lifted off the break and did a slight tap of the gas to shift weight and then put in the clutch preparing to cost across the small patch of ice. I held the wheel strait and as I crossed the ice the car drifted slowly towards the left guardrail. The tail of the car never moved from right behind the front end. It stayed perfectly strait. I tried to counter steer, but had no response. As the car scraped along the guardrail the rear fender hit a reflector and bounced the rear end back into traffic hitting the driver side door of another car. Both cars spun over the edge of a fifty-foot embankment. The funny thing was, the only reason I was driving my car home for Christmas and not flying, was because my dad and I were going to put in a new interior and ALL of my Christmas presents that year were for my car. Even though the car was drivable, all four corners were smashed and the frame was bent. Since I only paid $2500 for the car I knew it was totaled. When the insurance guy came to my house he took one look at the car, saw the Porsche badge and said, "How does $5600 sound?"
Needless to say we took it. 6 months later I found a 88 944 turbo with stage 2 chips, koni yellows, lightened fly, and only had one dent on the passenger side door for $5500.
After I sold that Honda, I had $5000 that I had saved to use for car stuff I bought and sold all of those cars and never went past 5k. I am 19 years old and have owned a Honda, 3.5 Porsches, and a jaguar. I think that’s pretty dam nice.

Wow thats the first time I ever said anything about my accident on this board. It realy did scare the hell out of me. I always said that most every accident could have been prevented. Well I guess I was wrong. My passenger said that he watched my reaction to everything and there was nothing I could have done to prevent what happened.

I'm 22 and in college, I have a unique situation where I work for half the year and go to school the other half. The only reason I felt comfortable buying the 86 951 was my ability to work on it. Since i'm able to do my own work (short of engine rebuild) the only expenses are parts and my time. It is my primary transportation however I only drive it for half of the year since I walk to school.

You too? I haven't paid for a hair cut in literally 2 years. I've got it down to a science - don't even need a mirror. Hey, don't laugh - it saves, what - 10 bucks a week or so? That's 400-500 a year!

Euro, how do we afford our cars???

We work our butts off in the real world and don't sit a MTSU and spend all of our money anymore on beer like we used too!!! I used to work at the burger king on northfield? I think that was the street, or maybe it was Tennessee.

Anyway, the point being is that a couple of years ago I would spend my money on anything.(phi phi k a, all the way TT K A) Now, I pretty much save my money because I'm tired of not having any.

I think if you ask a lot of the guys, we do a lot of our own work(hence the board). Also, the ones who do not make as much money as others probably spend quite a bit of their money on their cars. It's tough, but it is worth it if it is your hobby.

Thanks epunk, but if you knew anything about me you would know that I have worked my butt off since I was old enough to get a working permit. If you took the time to read the board you would also know that I do all my own work including full engine rebuilds including my current 2.8
