Review of the NA-Tune from Rogue Tuning
Hello folks,
I have been asked by a few folks to give my thoughts on the NA-Tune and custom MAF that Josh has pout together for the NA 944. There is a thread documenting it's creation but looks like I might be the first customer to post a review of the product, and I didn't want to clog up hte other thread with my ramblings. So read this for what it is worth. My hope is others will feel free to post thier experieces with the device as it spreads out into the 944 world more.
So first a little about me. I am 42 years old and been into cars for most of my life. I have owned another 944 before as well as a 928 for a short time. Have driven but never owed 911s and 951s. Been into Mustangs and my family is big into Corvettes. I have a '77 Stingray am in the process of bringing back from the dead. I lke Fiero GTs but am about to finally say goodbye to my '86 GT with the custom 3.4 V6 in it, about to finally build our dream house. I am the Tech Session Chairman for a southern chapter of the PCA. I have been through high speed police driving courses in Texas. That's me and a little about my experience level. I am not an expert, but not a newbie either.
I got another 944 right after I got back from Iraq. Purchased 2 of them actually and after alot of work had me a great running if funny looking multi-colored car. I live about 68 miles from where I work and wanted a fun daily driver that wouldn't kill me completely at the gas pumps. I had always missed the way my first 944 handled. Speed was not a priority.
The conversion of your DME to use the 28 pin chip will run you $50, I had to get this since my car is a '86. The MAF and chip itself will run you $500 , nope it's not super cheap but keep reading. Install is fairly straight forward and you will need little if any help with it. I did my install in about 30 minutes I think and I was taking my time. The nice thing is it can just as easily be taken off if you decide to sell your car. If you do this I advise finding you a spare DME to swap out when you put the old style AFM back into it. As of this morning I have driven my car about 300 miles since installing the MAF. About half of that on open interstate, 25% on back roads, and 25% in traffic.
First and foremost let me say this, if your looking for something to make your NA drive as fast as a Turbo please don't waste your time reading any more. Only converting your NA to a turbo, V-8 or a supercharged car will get you there. What this does do is really help wake the NA up. My car has a MSD ignition and SLP resonator in place of the cat, and that's about it as far as engine upgrades. So what does the Rogue set up do for me?......the car breaths better and pulls harder in every gear. You will notice a drop in your gas mileage at first simply because your right foot will be enjoying the car all over again in a way. It makes a 944 feel like it should have felt from the begining. Ever feel like your NA is trying to wistle with a couple of cotton ***** stuff into its cheek? Just not quite right? This device helps spit the cotton ***** out.
You will feel a difference in the way the car accerates. Again, not a religious experience mind you. But there is no doubt a big improvement has been made. There is a dip and hill on my way to work on a 2 lane street. Before the mod I noticed I felt the need to downshift into 4th if I hadn't built my speed up a little since the speed limit goes from 35 to 55 at the top of the hill. Now the car feels like it can pull up that same hill better without downshifting. Split shifting, going from 1st to 3rd in traffic for instance, is easier since the car pulls better. Passing is easier in traffic. I have been running 93 octane with it but after talking to Josh am switching to 89.
In short, I like it...I really like it. If I wreck my car on the way home this will be one of the first items I pull off of it to transplant into my next 944.
I have not added the 4 degree offset key yet but its going in soon. Josh has been great and customer service with the transaction was exceptional. And no, I was not one of the ones to get a advanced copy of the device, paid full price for everything. Josh did not ask me to do this thread. I just wanted to give my opinion for those who are considering buying one of these.
Hope this helps a little.

F40LM Thank you for taking the time to give a comprehensive review on this product. I am thinking about getting this to add to my '88 NA as a hiliday gift to myself.
If anyone else has installed the NA Tune I would love to hear about other people's experiances with it.

Thanks Michael for your candid review!
I'm glad you are enjoying the kit! With the cam-key, expect another 4-5% hp and torque. The final result is really satisfying.

That said, I should be shipping your kit by the beginning of the week.
I really expect the S2 to see good gains! With the MAF it should bring the car very close to the 968 horsepower / torque.
