Does anyone have this in their early car that can compare it's improvement over stock vs. an 85/2 DME/AFM with FR Wilks race chip?

Michael's (OP) review is pretty spot on. However, I would add that spending the extra few dollars on the 4° cam key is WELL worth the money, and added 1/2hr of install time (If you're already doing the timing belt). The combination really wakes the car up. Its no longer a car "from the 80's".... which is another great reason for the NA kit from Rogue Tuning.

Even if it didn't improve performance or fuel mileage at all, it would still be worth it. Have you priced a new or rebuilt AFM? The AFM has pieces in it that move and wear out. Over 30 years, I would bet that your AFM isn't performing as accurately as it should be. The AFM directly controls the fuel mixture (calculated in the DME). So if the signal is not "perfect" coming from the AFM, then your fuel mixture can be off by many % of where it should be. Yes the O2 will correct for most of it, but not all of it, and not at WOT. The NA kit corrects all of that. With a modern MAF sensor, its much more accurate, and has no moving parts to wear out.

So with the NA kit, you get:

A performance chip (~$250)
A replacement for the AFM (because they are worn out after 30 years) (rebuilt $200 - new $1200!!)

And then you add on the performance gain of the less restrictive MAF pipe (no barn door like the AFM), and the 4° cam key to the dyno tuned engine maps that Rogue Tuning has done... for $520 (If you have the 28pin DME)..... Its very easy to justify it as more than just "a chip".

Rogue Tuning (and other companies, as well) has done a great deal to help us preserve our cars. By switching to modern, easily replaceable from any part store, and more accurate sensors, our cars are no longer "outdated". They are keeping up with the technologies of modern car manufacturers, which will help us keep them on the road longer. It makes it easier to pass emissions tests, get better fuel mileage..and even rack up a few more kills

I converted my 84 last year to late dme/afm with wilks race chip.Didn't blow me away.What it did was smooth out all the dead spots in the rev range.It feels crisper and cleaner.Worth the money sort of.Get the mid range chip if you are going that way because my gas consumption dropped quite a bit with the race chip.

Now what Rogue has done is wayyyy better.If you really can gain 10 to 15 hp and 20 to 30 torque with his system(which he has shown with dyno proof),then that is a huuuuuge gain for the money. 10% more hp for a bolt on system!!!! Plus he gives you his chip.

I just kept my eyes peeled and got the early dme for around 120 bucks and I think about the same for the afm.Changed it in about half an hour.

I'm probably going to get his kit in the next 2 weeks.I'm just paranoid of sending my dme from Toronto to Colorado by mail for the 28 pin conversion.Worried it's going to get beat up. But I want the gains. I would love a turbo but the reliability my 84na gives me is unsurpassed.I get passed on the straights and then are up their butts on the corners!Way more rewarding!Cheers.

I have now done the 4 degree off set key install. For an extra 20 bucks you HAVE to include it in the mix when you do this mod. Keep in mind it is the MAF from Josh that allows the car to take true advantage of the offset. If your spending $500 for the tune you be crazy not to put in the offset key.

For the poster concerned about shipping the DME, don't let that stop you. Wrap that sucker in a few layers of bubble wrap (like I did) and send her on her way.

For the record, still loving the tune from Josh. If you are seriously thinking of improving the performance of your NA this is something you look at first.

Eagerly awaiting 16 valve version!!! That day can't come fast enough! I agree, this is just what the NA cars need.

I've got my set coming in the mail at the moment and am looking forward to getting it fitted.

This is the first of many little mods that are going into my car to optimise it's potential in road rallies and I feel it's one of the most important. I'm not straining to get huge HP gains and I don't frankly care about the top end power but any extra torque in the mid range is going to help to no end.

Once the Cam key and NA-Tune are fitted and tested for a while, it's on to weight savings and roll cage installation. After that, it's a higher flow exhaust and a worked head from LR.

Yeah, I already have the 85/2 DME & AFM with FR Wilk race chip--that's why I was asking. The MAF is something I've been considering since I learned of it a couple months ago.

Josh has isssued a update for the NA Tune chip, I have it installed and it has improved gas mileage.

Have put about 3,000 miles on my NA-Tune so far, no problems.

How do you get updates from him? Does he send you a new chip or can you download them on your PC?

I got a new chip. Could be I got one of the early ones and this 'update' is the standard chip.
