Default school me on the S2

I've been looking to buy another 944 I've debated between the turbo or the s2. I'm sure at this point that I want to go with an s2.

What should I look for on them other than obvious history. Prone rust areas and such? Are option codes the same as the 8v? What's a good spot for performance parts, like exhaust and such? Also are they chip capable or do you need to piggyback? Does it require 93 octane? I'm sure ill come up with more questions, but that'll work for now.

2100 posts and this?

Like, maybe you were in the 911 or 928 forum, but your username is clearly 87 944...

??

*edit*

Well, I guess that's no way to win friends. Let's see what I can answer just from osmosis (since I'm a 944 Turbo guy).

S2 is a good car. Rust areas are the same as the rest of the 944 series. None, unless there has been trauma/accident. Option codes are all the same (search, there's a nice list). Not a lot of performance (engine wise) parts, better off looking at suspension and brakes, just make sure timing belt and water pump are taken care of, and clutch is in good condition. Check out roguetuning to see if there is anything for the S2, I like his stuff. Not sure on the high octane, I am going to guess yes, you need a higher octane for higher resistance to detonation, and to get ~220hp out of a 2.5L I4, well, I imagine it's high compression!

They are great, the extra displacement really shows when you are loping around town and even better when you womp on it. They have all the "good" brakes and suspension bits the turbos were optioned with as well.

They do like premium gas, 91 should suffice. There are exhaust and chip upgrades available, Doug will probably tell you how he likes a 951 catback on his (sorry )

Rogue is working on a MAF kit for the S/S2 which should bring some pretty nice gains. Maintenance is largely the same, remember to check the camshaft chain and pads.

I really enjoy my 89 944 S2. Great track car, especially with 16x8's on all 4 corners with 245's.

FWIW, the 91's have the round diagnostic port, which can connect to a Durametric with an adapter cable. Also, the 91's have the rear wing (carried over to the 968), instead of the rubber spoiler.

x2 on checking timing belt, waterpump, and tensioning pads on the cam chain.

Yes I love that exhaust!

For everyday driving a S2 is a blast. Check the cam pads and do the cam cover seal while you are in there. Clutch is about the same as an NA to change.

You can get a chipset for the car to wake it up a bit.

I have put 10k miles on my S2 this year and it has been pretty maintenance free other than the scheduled belts and WP.

I had never paid attention to the s2 and was interested. I'm more of an off topic poster then 944 specific. I know them well, but with a different engine then the 2.5l I thought there might be something specific to look for.

I figured premium, but wanted to make sure as stations near me don't stock it.

I didn't give the S2 any thought until I bought mine. I couldn't be happier with my car.

I have accidentally put regular in it before. Didn't kill it but I kept the revs down.

The 16v motors do have knock detection, so you shouldn't kill it with lower grade gas, but you really should run premium as the compression is higher on the S and S2 series cars.

I have an S, and my dad has an S2 and they are great cars. A big improvement over the standard 8v motors.

The 10.9:1 compression ratio does beg for higher octane petrol.

I have a custom stainless exhaust that really makes the engine sing a sweet song.

It's a great car, that slots nicely between the standard 2.5 N/A and the 951.

Find a nice one and jump on it.

if you intend to use it as a daily driver S2 wins over turbo, but if you are looking at track use and are power hungry, it's turbo over the S2 anytime.

I've owned my '90 S2 for a bit more than a year now, and love it! You wouldn't confuse it with fast by today's standards, but the 3.0 16V is a great and strong motor and the car is simply a blast to drive.

I've taken it to the track a few times (my ultimate goal is to make it a bit of a Club Sport "gentlemans racer") and have had lots of fun with it.

I haven't done much to it in terms of modifications; I'm just working to make sure it's mechanically reliable. Once I get some seats, harness, and bar in it, I'll probably be checking out Rouge Tuning for the upcoming MAF/tune and maybe exhaust. Safety first, though!

Sure, it's cost some money - it IS a Porsche AND a 944 after all! - but overall I'm really happy I bought it!

Probably do a couple track days, but mostly an alternate car to my stealth, so like a semi daily with storage during winter. Even tho my 8v did great in snow im not looking Mint, I work on cars for a living so lil work won't kill me.

I've decided against red, wanna try and find blue or another color. If I find a red that just fits everything than awesome.

Do s2 fit any of the spec 944 classes? Just in case I end up making it more of a track car than I plan for at this time.
