Default Best headlight bulbs

I've looked all over and i can't really find a general consensus on what the best bulbs to get for the 944. I usually get the 20 dollar silverstars for my past cars but after reading that upgrading bulbs can burn the housing unit. I'm not entirely sure whats the best way to go. I feel like the stock bulbs are simply not bright enough especially since I do a lot of driving in streets with no street lights whatsoever.

Side note, how do you tell if you have a sealed headlamp and have to replace the whole unit or you're able to take it apart?

I don't know what year car you have, but my 89 has sealed headlights. I can't find the receipt, but I replaced them with higher power Hella lights and that made a big difference.

Travis over at Rennbay has a great headlight upgrade option.
That said, I can't comment on what the "Best" headlight bulbs are.

Best: Hella e-codes with 80/100w halogen and the wiring kit to go with it. You will be surprised at how much your old wiring is strangling the light output.

Any hacking and splicing to redo that? Or PnP adaptors? Mine are just random Sylvania units...

I drive for a living and most is at night. When I was still running incandescent lights in my truck ( I am running LED now), I had found the Hella Xenon Blue bulbs (55/60W) to work the best. Anything higher wattage I found started to cause problems with heat. Use a conversion headlight and DON'T use the adapter, cut and solder wires of the new plug together using heat shrink tubing.

Complete Ecode Headlight Kit - Porsche 944 $235.97

The relay harness just plugs in and removes all the strain off of your car's wiring. The Ecode lenses with their sharp cutoff allow the use of higher wattage bulbs without blinding oncoming traffic.
In the kit above we include two standard wattage bulbs and two 90/130w bulbs but you can pickup any standard H4 to put in the lenses. There are a bunch of choices out there.

The rennbay kit is well put together, safe, easy to install, and it makes a huge difference in light output. I think everyone here should have it.

Travis, if I were to just buy the E-code lenses with bulbs, what bulbs come with? I already have the lighting harness on my car, and would like the most powerful bulbs available. I also have a handful of 70A relays in the garage in case I switch to aircraft lights...

They come with the standard 55/60 but I can swap out the big boys if you like. Just put a note in with the order and I will take care of it for you.

OP, send me a PM and I'll put you in contact with a lighting consultant who can steer you in the right direction based on your driving needs.
