Default 944 Wind Tunnel Testing

So, I know the question has been asked if a 944 produces downforce. For the definitive answer, read this post in my blog.

Have fun!

I was re-reading your post and I am fairly impressed that there is only 133 pounds of lift. Considering that the car weighs 3000 lbs, it maintains 95% of its contact pressure at speed. Also, the measured drag was .37 which would mean that the the turbo at .33 is really more efficient. It might actually have downforce. Do you mind if I ask how much it cost you? I'd be willing to donate some money to have a 944 turbo tested if somebody in the area would like to try.

Thanks for the info.

Harvey, just curious, did you have the engine under-tray installed? Were the windows up?

Would love to see the results of a 951 with the same adjustment program.

I run with windows down, as required for most HPDE events, and thus did not have the windows up for the test.

I don't have an engine undertray.

I don't want to quote exact costs as that is up to A2 but I paid around $500 / hour.

It may seem like a lot of money but gaining 2 hp in the 944 Spec class could be pretty significant and cheaper than trying to find more hp in the engine.

Help me out. What is different about a 944 Turbo, from an aero standpoint?

951:
-it sits lower
-the front bumper is different and might offer a drastic improvement..it has less gaps and they are smaller
-it has the rear under bumper thing that helps
-it has an engine undertray

As above. basically they focused more on the aero package. lower cD, rear diffuser, under body aero etc I believe the rear diffuser/underbody treatment, doesn't provide anymore down force but does reduce drag and improves stability in cross winds at pace

Very interesting data! Thank you for taking the time (and expense) of passing this along.

I will say the few times I've had my S2 on track I've been impressed with it's stability at speed, and this information puts some science behind it.

I would consider getting a few of you guys to pitch in and go do some testing on the 951.

Not all just about downforce. Sure, you can add wings, splitters, canards, underbody etc...but it would help to have quantifiable data.
