I did all 4 phone dials 100% black with like 4 coats, took 2 cans. I then took a razor knife and cut a thin line around the rim edges and peeled that off after it had a day to completely dry/cure.

It peels off really stretchcy, overspray can be rubbed off and comes off in little *****.

Didn't like the 100% black too much. Many of my younger (20s and 30s) friends or co-workers liked it more, but for me it felt it took something from the car. Here are the 3 stages - no dip. all black, and "faux Fuchs"

Jeff

PS-we have like 5 Home Depot stores in Tucson, ALL of them were sold out but one, I bought the last case of 6 cans. All they normally stock is black, I think you need to go online for different colors, of which there are many.

Like it!

My local ace hardware sells red, it's the only place I know of in town with red, but they charge $9!

My friend dipped all 4 of his bmw's wheels with 1 can!

Well, I've wanted to implement this design for my phone dials. This plastic spray would soften my fall if things look wrong!

Here's my design on my car, sorry about the whipped-up computer-drawing. Check front and rear wheels for comparison.

Thoughts ?

Are you saying the front wheel is a modified phone dial? (or computer representation of one). It looks great, whatever it is. Do you mean to machine phonies to look like that? I'd love those, if they were structurally sound. Even better with black centers.

Thanks for the compliment, I like it too. The only pics I found were on the thread I started on the "other" forum.

Thanks! Yep, the front wheel is a modified phone dial (or computer representation of one). To machine phonies like that and to keep them structurally sound would be great. First, though, I want to see how it looks to use black (hello plasti dip) as shown in my picture. I'm hoping to accentuate the 5 spokes, but if it's ugly I'll remove it. You can zoom on the pic by pressing CTRL and the "+" or "-" or "0" buttons.

Have to say, that would be difficult, given that the castings were engineered to have metal where it is for structural integrity, removing it may weaken them many times over. And also, if not more importantly, the balance issue would be of utmost importance.

A daunting task to do safely, if you ask me, if not impossible.

That aside, they look great, a mix of old and new.

It would be better to get new wheels.

Two more options:

Black out the outer diameter from the star legs to where the wheel crease is on the lip. The star portion and outer lip will be silver creating a floating star effect.

Carry the black between the star legs to the wheel crease leaving the legs silver to the wheel rim.

When I had my phone dials I spent a while thinking of doing this, even did some electrical tape mockups. Please plastidip yours, it'd be interesting to see if we've finally found a way to make phone dials look less ugly!

I was able to do all 4 wheels with one can. It was simple and easy, just a good clean on the wheels, let them dry and spray. Here is a pic of my ROH's in matte black:
