Default Steering rack DIY swap 968

Hi

my father is in the middle of a steering rack swap (DIY) on his 968. However, he didn't check the new alongside the old...and hence the new is in, but it is nearly 2" short on either side.

I suspect he got a steering rack from a 924 perhaps? Anyway, what are his options now, are there adapters to extend them on either side as workaround solution?

Thanks for any help.

Maybe he has the wrong length tie rod arms (early offset)? I don't know if there is a difference in the actual rack. Perhaps someone knows?

probably wrong offset tierods. 924 and 944 racks are the same length and early offset (924 and 944 thru 86) have the same rack+rod length

Just take the correct length tie rods from 968 rack.

Its very straightforward but it can be a real PITA without a good bench vise sometimes.

Depending on his age etc it may be worth it to just have him drop off both racks off at an alignment shop and pay them say $20 to swap them over.

The rest of the swap should be fairly easy.

Won't happen in northern europe for $20. Swapping tie rods is a simple task to do and most likely your father have all necessary tools available.

Anyone know where I could find exploded drawings or similar so I can guide him through what tools etc.? The place where he got the new rack acknowledges they probably sent him the wrong item and will pay for a swap. Easiest would be if a guy could come home to him with the right tools...

You need 19mm, 32mm & 22mm wrenches. A bench wise helps a lot.

19,22 & 32mm of these

And this helps a lot

This is also a useful tool

As you can see, most likely your father have all necessary tools to accomplish the job.

If you pull the dust boot off you can see how they're attached. Threaded and the metal lip on the second picture is bent into a tab on the rack

If you do a SEARCH for Tie Rod Removal on here it will bring up a wealth of write-ups on DIY help.

Cheers,

http://www.clarks-garage.com/

There is a good write up on Power Steering Rack Replacement in the Garage Shop manual that discusses tie rod removal and replacement.

Edit: Just figured out how to post a direct link
