Default Timing belt running off center of the cam gear

When I removed the timing belt covers on my '86 951, I noticed the timing belt is running off center (pushed back) from the cam gear face. Here's a few pics. The belt is running 1/4" back from the cam gear face, and the timing belt has been eating a groove into the plastic back cover. The PO had the belts last done at an independent shop, and I have the receipt showing comprehensive list of parts replaced. Any thoughts why this is happening?

I've got a new set of covers on the way from Lart and preparing to replace all the belts. Want to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Thanks

there should be a washer that goes behind the crank gear to space it out a bit

Was the plastic cover tightened down all the way? I have seen some cars where previous mechanics have neglected to even screw the covers on...

eSmith,

Some thoughts; just finished '87 944S belts, seals rollers, WP and Heat exchanger, Cams, tappets, chain and chain rub plate.

Check this: Roller on cam belt tensioner; there is a thrust lip on the roller that guides belt from moving towards engine; roller cam be installed either way; make sure lip is closest to engine when installed on tensioner; roller fits and can be installed either way; make sure guide lip is closest to engine / away from the tensioner; this guide the belt and keep it away from the engine.

This is true - it is easy to mistake the timing belt tensioner for the balance belt unit.

Thanks! I'll check that when I put it all back together.

That happened to me too, except mine was not rubbing on the cover. Here was my thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...t-aligned.html

After looking further, the shop that did the last belt and rollers job swapped the balance belt tensioner with the timing belt tensioner. The right parts were installed in the wrong locations...

Hopefully you've now gotten all your rollers installed with the proper front to back orientation. If they're on backwards, the belts will ride just as you indicated.
