Default Tensioning accessory belts help

I tried looking around, and I see people say to tighten them so you can push in about an inch. I did this, but I still get a squeek when it warms up... should I tighten or loosen?

Agree with tighten it. Old rule of "thumb" I use is 1/4 inch deflection in center with press of thumb; don't have to go nuts with thumb pressure; you should not be able to slide belt with hand along the crank pulley. Is the adjuster working smoothly? Mine had to be cleaned and lubed; took about 30 minutes to clean up.

adjuster works fine. I just didn't know how tight to go. Now I do. I just have to figure out what is causing my whirring sound from the accessories and I should be good to go. Should the alternator and the a/c pulleys turn nice and easy by hand with no noise? My a/c pulley is rough and makes a slight noise. Bearing going bad? any idea on where to get a new one?

Ah, sounds like your alternator bearings are failing.

You can get your current one refurbished or you can pick up a refurbished one and return yours for a core charge.

I got my refurbished from Pelican Parts - I've had nothing but good experiences with them: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...ELchrg_pg1.htm

That said, they are significantly cheaper from paragon: http://www.paragon-products.com/category_s/376.htm

When you do adjust the acc. belts, make sure you loosen the mounting bolts, otherwise you not only put a lot of strain on he tensioner, you stand a chance of breaking the mounting ears off.

Did that. Thanks though. It seems that is a common mistake as it is posted everywhere I search. Any ideas on what my problem is though? I don't really know how to diagnose where my sound is comming from...

I use a 1/2 inch deflection on the upper span of the AC/altermator belt.

I found if you use more pressure the oil pump/front crankshaft seal will leak or burn out.

The correct answer is only tighten until AC belt "squeal" stops (AC ON) and not more.

" AC Bearing" is actually the compressor clutch.

http://www.griffiths.com/achelp/achelp2.html

You can replace the compressor clutch bearing with the compressor installed but it is easier with the correct tools. Replacement-new clutch parts are expensive.
You might be better buying a "rebuilt compressor"

Please post "86 Turbo" in your signature. It helps to know what car you have.

I guess my question is what should the ac pulley feel like? There are two things that turn on this guy. The thing the belt goes on is hard to turn. The thing that is in front of it turns just fine. Should the pulley that the belt is attached to be easy or hard to turn by hand? should you hear a rough sound or no?

I don't really care about the ac working right now, just want to get the car moving today without spending too much money in case this isn't really the problem. I can f*** with getting the a/c working another day. I just wanna drive!
