V2Rocket_aka944, how is the shifter end holding up after more than a year of use?

I have a procedure on my web site (wbnoble.com) - I've done this for years - grind off weld and remove post, thread hole, bore shaft, install bolt and lock nut - clean, works well, no slop.

951 driver, I am about to spend an afternoon attempting to reduce slop in my shifter.

I'm going to do the bearing fix on shifter linkage. I'm not sure what to do on the transmission end.
Are you happy with your results?
Any recommended changes?
Did you install boots?

Also, more importantly, did the heim joints (and boots) add enough additional mass to change the feel of the shifter in a negative way?

I just want to give kudos for the OP. It has to be one of the best DIY write-ups I've ever seen. I did your exact mod, down to ordering the parts from McMaster-Carr, and combined it with the billet short-shifter from only944.com. Works like the bomb-diggity!

Awesome job. This thing ought to be a sticky thread somewhere!

I'm confused....I thought the shifter from only944.com WAS a short shifter. What else, exactly, are you going to change next?

The short shifter from only944 is the shifter linkage that is in the back of the car at the transaxle. It is a short version of Part 2. The shifter at only944 is Part 1 of this guide.

I think this is pretty cool that I did this mod without seeing this tread before. Although I have the only944 short shifter and the only difference is the link is on the otherside (front of car side) then the stock rear position. Other than that everything works great. Reason being was it kept pushing the shifter out of gear 2nd, fourth, and reverse. Possibly due to the slight change in position of the short throw. Because on the stick shifter it was fine in the stock location.

The short shifter from only944 replaces the stock unit at the tranmission, on the driver side.

The shifter from only944 is different...it replaces the stock unit in the cockpit where you shift (part one of V2's write up).

There is a third linkage that is located on top of the transmission (part two of V2's write up).

Just did Part I and Part II. I used a hacksaw with good success to cut the glob of weld in Part I. The bolts on the linkage in Part II are cursingly difficult to reach; at one point I was struggling to get an 1/8-turn on the bolt! It's well worth it, of course.

The shifter is much tighter, as expected. Much less wiggle and it goes right into gears, so I can actually shift faster now. Most of the improvement came from switching out the linkage on the transmission. The stock part has a lot of play. The parts were good quality, too.

Just want to thanks a lot to the people who figured out the best parts and thanks to V2 for the write-up.

I am attempting to make the side to side adjustment in the shift lever. (Not sure I have the skill to go as far as you did) Clark's Garage says to loosen the locknut on the intermediate arm and slide the shift lever until it is vertical. When I loosen the nut it doesn't seem to have much adjustment. I can't seem to make any difference left or right. Looking at your picture I loosened the part on the left that you replaced. Am I on the right track? Just trying to clean up getting into 2nd gear.
