Default transmission/transaxle/differential

I need to replace a piece of the drive train, but not certain of the name of it. I have a 85.5 with an automatic transmission. It's actually a car I bought my daughter. Yesterday the section that the cv drive shafts connect to had some gears internally break.

What is that section called so i can get the right piece. Or do I just replace the transmission as a whole?

Thanks in advance.

sounds like you busted the differential. it would be cheaper to buy a whole nother transmission than to find just the diff and have it installed.

thanks. I knew in other cars that is what it is called, but wasn't sure in these.

When i pulled the fill plug to check the fluid level it was empty. so added a quart of royal purple and it is working again. no noise or anything.

Still going to replace it though.

Automatic 944 <---- Well, there's your problem..

Basically you're going to want to get rid of the Automatic Tranny completely, and install a proper 5-Speed Manual Gearbox with an LSD!!

i was thinking that if the gears were broken, the trans would not be ok to drive now. if you have no issues currently i would wait to pull the trans until you can diagnose the current issue. what lead you to believe that the gears were broken?

you're side gears broke? what'd you do, spin the tires a lot?

you'd be better off replacing the trans, it'd end up being cheaper than getting a rebuild

just bought it for my daughter for christmas 2 months ago. so no we haven't been spinning tires, but who knows in it it's prior life.

the noise while i had it up on stands was coming from the diff. it sounded like metal clanging in there while in gear.

what do you mean the side gears?

Here's a good look inside the differential

https://rennlist.com/forums/9209160-post1.html

I can't imagine what would make a lot of noise and stop when oil is added, but automatics likely have separate differential and transmission "crankcases". I wonder if someone drained both but only refilled the trans??

it does have different fluids reservoirs for the transmission and differential.
