Best NA Oil Cooler Location
This is for my second 944. It gets used as an alternative daily driver but is mainly used as a fun track car, nothing competitive, open days etc. I need the a/c working for when I use it as a dd but I want to fit an oil cooler to control the heat better on the track.
Option 1. Fit an S2 oil cooler in the LH front fender behind the vacant fog light location.
Option 2. Fit a RX7, aftermarket or Lindsey cooler in front of the condenser at the bottom.
Option 3. Fit a SFR or aftermarket cooler in the nose panel.
I'm leaning towards the S2 cooler because I think the Lindsey location will block/heat-up the condensor too much when i need it. The SFR location in the header worries me as it seems it would put extra strain on the oil pump to get the oil up there.
Any advise appreciated, thx.

I can't really help you because I haven't done this yet. However I'm curious, did your oil temps come up high enough to worry you? Because of tires I haven't pushed mine as hard as I could. Thus far heat has not been an issue. This might be something I've got to look at too. I'll be interested to see your solution!

If you can't find an RX7 cooler, go to a boneyard and find a late 70s/early 80s M-B Diesel. They have oil coolers similar in size to the RX7 but slightly smaller so it's an easier fit. I have had one on my car for going on 2 years now. After a good driving session the inlet side will be burning hot to the touch, and the outlet will be ambient temperature. No oil pressure problems and I can get them all day for $20 out here. I bolted it to the sheetmetal crossmember behind the NA bumper and now on my custom front end it attaches in the same basic location, but behind a 951 bumper. The Benz does have some odd fittings though, but I was able to get the Benz factory hose ends crimped to -10 stainless line and have had no leaks.
You can save money by using regular steel hydraulic fittings (Like they'd use on a CAT) over the AN stuff.
I would suggest that, or use an S2/968 cooler with better ducting in factory location. Skip the 951 cooler altogether. SFR/Lindsey stuff is nice and shiny but way too expensive for me to consider, and it's not like an oil cooler "wears out" unless it gets hit with something

I put a turbo oil cooler behind the right front fog light opening. Turned the cooler sideways and fabled a bracket using the radiator support and it works great even with stock turbo lines.

Thanks for the replies. I'm leaning towards the S2 as it looks like it would fit perfectly behind the RH fog opening. The turbo one would only get airflow to half the fins wereas the S2 I feel would be more efficient for the na. I already have the housing. Anyone have a good used S2 cooler with lines for sale?

M758 did you change the lines or something? Trying to set my cooler up in the foglight area and I really have to fight it. Not to mention one of the lines seems to want to bend down towards the ground.

i might run this Z06 cooler for my LS3. big, bad and reasonably priced.
but my engine air intake will be moved anyway and only about half of the big cooler left shrouding the radiator.

I'm going back and forth between the KISS cooler and Lindsey. Does anyone else worry about getting a cooler out of the boneyard and wondering why the car blew up and if you can flush everything out it? For a few hundred dollars extra I would rather go new.

Those are the standard turbo lines. I don't believe they are in the same orietatation as on a turbo however.

My current oil cooler setup (with the 300TD cooler and 6 ft of -10 stainless-braided teflon lines, plus fittings and crimping) cost a grand total of $50.
YMMV.

On the spec car I run the same set up Joe has. On a really hot day I see the oil get to 240 if I'm in traffic but cool back down quickly when running clean air.
