Default Early (83) needing desperate suspension wisdom

Hey everyone!

I need some experience wisdom when it comes to the selection of suspension components for the 44, and thats where you guys come in! I need some important questions answered so I can not f up my suspension!

My car currently has everything stock besides Koni Yellow Sport Struts.

I am looking at either 200, 220, or 250 Weltmeister springs.
What is the noticable difference between the three and which one is the best for street with some track and DE time? I found this list on here and this should help with my torsion bar choice

mm - lbs

26 - 189

27 - 220

28 - 254

29 - 292

30 - 335

31 - 382

32 - 434

33 - 490

My best guess is that based on what I am looking for it would be a 220 spring with a 27mm torsion bar upgrade?

Will 220s safely work with Koni sports when the car is lowered 1.25-1.5 inches?

What sway bars will I need to upgrade to and where could I get them for a good price? I am thinking MO30 but can where can I find "racer on a budget" prices?
How far do I need to lower the eccentric and index the torsion bar so It will sit nicely with a front end lowered that much?

And importantly, how big is a job is the install for all of these components and what parts should I change out while im there?

Thank you too all who reply!

I'd say 26 or 27mm t-bar. The factory made the front springrate a little higher than the back so I'd probably emulate that in an upgraded scenario. Going too stiff (relatively) in the back will make it uncomfortable to ride in.

Shocks don't really care about lowering unless it's extreme...

Go for some Turbo swaybars, those are bigger and pretty inexpensive. If you can find 951M030, cool. 968 M030 stuff is expensive, but works. I had a 968 M030 rear bar on my car for a while recently and it changed the car.

Depending on how much rake you have already (difference in F/R height) that would determine how much to drop the t-bars. Since you're dropping 1-1.5" in height from springs you could probably go all the way down on the eccentric bolt. You don't index the torsion bar when lowering it, only if you're changing them out.

Thank you V2!

My car already has a bad enough rake as it is from the previous ower, the back needs to come down at least .5 inch already so it will need to come down at least 2 with the lowered front end

you can easily go w/ a 28mm rear and 250 front spring to make it worth your trouble. Alan VT951's car has this setup and its not too stiff and rides great w/ more spring. I wouldnt pull the rear torsions for less than 28mm. Sways- try to find some s2 sways like 26.5mm front and 18mm rear- biggest you'll find w/o going to the mo30 968 30mm/19mm sways.

Thank you for the info!
Will the sways easily swap out or do I need to update attachment points?

sways should bolt right on- if you dont have a rear you'll need the brackets.

And you'll need the camber eccentrics with the stud for the drop links...

I do where I'm at it isnt bad. But because of my bilstein HDs and my coilovers even of I hit a bump the rebound it so quick It does make any difference between little and big bumps. But you should go with 250# lowering springs and 30mm t- bars in my opinion. With bilstein HDs shocks and stuts. Just upgrading to the bilsteins makes a huge ! Difference

Good feedback on this thread.

I would agree with both of the points the previous guys made.

1. You'll want to go a little stiffer, 220's and 27's will be an improvement but there is a lot of room there before the ride gets too harsh.

2. Bilsteins will make a huge difference.

and I would add

3. Sways are enourmously important, no doubt you've noticed how much roll your car has now. Springs and struts will help but the sways will help the roll and not stiffen the ride up too much.

That's a lot of spring for an 83 which is the lightest of the 944's, especially for street use. For a track car with solid bushings maybe, but on a street car you must be getting through engine/trans mounts every year and shaking up all those 28yr old electrical components cannot be good. But if your happy with it, it's all good

If you decide to go coil-over in the rear I have a torsion bar-delete torsion carrier and coil-over kits that fit the 83 rear shocks, 18mm rear sway bar, and an assortment of front and rear springs available.

And just as another data point, don't go too stiff for the street, unless you are going to track the car. In New England, where the frost heaves are so big they have shadows, I have broken alternator adjustment rods, motor mounts, and fuel rails, but the car handled fantastically on the track. The car no longer sees the track so I put the stock suspension back on.

Shameless plug: I also have a rear torsion carrier with torsion bars for a 86 951 (could fit 86 NA too) for cheap money.
