Agreed, but they were designed together with a body made for the mid-engine. Stuffing an engine in the middle of a body designed for a front-engine is not the way to go.

I own both. I'll take my 928's over my 944S when it comes to the cost of maintaining them.

isn't that cuz you haven't driven the 944S in like 57 years

hacker, how much does a 928 engine weigh? well over 500lbs yes?

i just want to clarify for this thread that i am in no way bashing 928s. a 928S is what got me into porsches, i wanted one before i found the 944 (which i only bought because the 928 wasnt for sale after all). i would trade my 944 for a decent 928 in a heartbeat. its just that, in terms of putting other engines in the 944, there are better, newer, lighter, more powerful, cheaper-to-maintain options, such as the ubiquitous SBC/LS1. if you want a 4-cam 32v, feel free to help me strive to stuff a northstar into a 944, which is only like 10lbs heavier than an LS1 and makes as much power as a 5.0 928.

the 928 will beat most everyone down, eventually. killed me in less than 1 year.

my 944S was a super cheap ride up until the day i forgot to check the oil and ran it hard on I-10.

i miss the 944.

I had these discussions a lot with my mechanic who has a lot of racing experience, ive even asked if a cayenne V8 would fit (stupid question) HE pretty much said go with an LS3 and your set. He put one in a late 90s 3 series and beats Ferrari Challenge 430s with it!

Not sure, but yea, it's not featherweight. First production aluminum V8 without steel sleeves. They overbuilt the hell out of it.
It may only be 4.5 - 5.4 liters but the overall dimensions and bore spacing are the same as a 502 GM BigBlock.

Go for it, I haven't pulled out the ban stick in a while.

I'm waiting for someone to drop an LT-5 into a 928 or 944. It's easily the most technologically advanced V8 to ever come out of Detroit. Towards the end of production, Doug Rippie teamed up with Mercury Marine and Lotus to finish development and released the 500+hp Black Widow edition ZR-1.

Then again, it's not like LT-5 show up in the junkyard everyday.

Doesnt the ZR1 use the same block as the normal C6 but they just supercharged it? Good reason being the Z06 motor is a gianormous piece of metal and the smaller motor is easier to place farther back and weighs less.

LT-5 = first generation ZR-1 sold from 1990-1994 with a Lotus designed, Mercury Marine built 32 Valve 350ci V8 to the tune of 405bhp

You see the two intake runners per cylinder? It's essentially a 16V and 32V engine in one with a triple stage plenum to maximize low end torque usually lost with 4-valve head engines. Too bad Porsche didn't think of this for the 944S and S2:

/damn kids....

Yea......there is that.

It would be fun to take the LT-5 ZR-1 chassis and put in an LS based KATECH 600+hp engine.

For those not aware, the ZR-1 from 90-94 has a much wider tail end to accommodate 315/35-17 tires out back. Even the doors are different since the "wedge" of the wider rear end starts midway through the doors.

Have we successfully thread-jacked this topic yet?

I think if you want to invest in a 928 engine your better off just getting a 928 to begin with? Just dont buy one with old wires, youll have fun if their old!

In the world of most powerful 928's, that car is 3rd or 4th.

#1 and #2 belong to the same owner / fabricator in Green Bay
