928 engine in a 944?
Someone posted a pic of a 944 race car that looked like it had a 928 v8 under the hood. Has anyone ever seen it done? Complete running single cam 928's can be had for under $4k, and you would have everything you need minus some of the custom parts like mounts etc.. I wonder if it would fit? It would not be as cost effective as an LS1, but it sure would have some major "Gee Whiz" factor.
No I'm not considering this swap, just thinking out loud. Winter is coming and my thoughts now turn to the bench racing season.

not a chance it'd fit in a standard-chassis'd 944...if you ever see a 928 motor out of the car you'll be amazed at how f*cking big it actually is
if you swap an SBC into a 928 you could sleep in the engine bay with the extra room...actual fact
not to mention how silly heavy a 928 motor is...and temperamental in reliability...and expensive to maintain...

but it's when you add back the other half of the engine the factory took out where it gets BIG.
try this...roughly measure from the outside edge of the cam tower to the crank centerline. now double that number. that is almost how wide a 928 motor is. im fairly certain the 944 motor is inclined at less than 45*, and since the 928 is a 90* motor, a 944 motor width doubled is less than the 928.

The 928 motor would actually fit better between the 944 frame rails than on the 928. The 928 bellhousing even uses the same bolt pattern to the torque tube.
The gotchas are the power brake booster would likely be in the way (pretty common on V8 swaps) and the 928 has the clutch in the rear, so you'd have to fit a clutch solution in the small 928 bellhousing.
The 928 uses the same bottom end bearings and parts as the 944 and is a fairly robust motor. Performance parts aren't exactly available from Summit though
this was from a porsche mechanic in germany who works at Porsche..

Never been done in the 944 frame, absolutely will not fit. There was a race car that someone built using a 944 body and 928 engine, but the whole front was cut off the body and a custom frame chassis built to fit the engine. Seeing the engine in the custom frame you can easily see that the 928 engine would protrude into the strut towers and into the wheel wells if it was in the stock chassis.
