definitely interested...does it attach to the headlight lid itself or the headlight body? just deletes the motor/lifter bar?

I love this idea because it allows for the ability to get rid of that mechanism, but, not having to go with the clear headlamp covers. I fully support this endeavor!

Just deletes the motor and lift bar or linkage or whatever it's called. It will catch the small round pin that's on each headlight lift arm (or whatever the thing is called that has the spherical joint on it).

The bracket is also designed to allow adjustment, so you can get your headlight lids nice and flush with the body.

Here's an update on the design. I did some FEA and found a few issues with stress concentrations, so here is a somewhat optimized version. Got rid of the handle because when I mocked it up in my car, it was obvious that it will work just as well without a handle, and fewer bends equals lower cost. Also, this design only weighs 6.5 oz. for the pair.

Alan, I don't know what's more impressive... that you did FEA on the design, or that you rendered on a kitchen counter!

I had, year ago, come up with a design where the light was spring loaded up, and there was a latch mechanism that held it down. That way you could pull a cable and they'd pop open. Then you could push them back down to latch. Didn't work that well... so I ended up leaving the spring loaded part, but just using zip ties to hold them down. For the once or twice a year I needed them, I would just cut the zip ties.

very, very cool! I much more professional approach than my stepdads 924 CGT replica racecar. He just used bungy cords lol.

Van, that's a cool idea. I'm still going to start with this simple bracket thing, but maybe down the road I'll take a stab at your idea.

So, the FEA and kitchen rendering... both are made very easy by SolidWorks.

Would buy a set. Thanks for taking the time to design it. Drive my car to and from the track so I need the lights but I swear under my breath every time I look at that heavy looking lump under the hood. Be sure to weigh the motor once you take it out.

Count me in too. I just wired up my track car for the headlight motor and would love to get rid of the 1000 lbs motor.

Do a lot of turning the lights on and off while at the track?

I think this will actually be funny. The new trend among 944 drivers, having to stop when it gets dark to flip up our headlamps. But hey, the weight savings is awesome!
