1989 944S2 For Sale
SOLD
Well, lets give this a shot.
Up for sale is my 1989 Porsche 944S2 with just under 118,000 miles on the chassis and about 750 miles on the rebuilt engine.
For full disclosure, I performed the rebuild myself but something may not have gone right. When idling it has a tendency to run hot, even getting past the upper line on the coolant gauge. It shakes more then it should at idle, though it goes away at speed. I performed a compression test and got 175PSI across the board on all 4 cylinders, this was after warming the engine up for about 5 minutes. It also seemed to go thru oil even though there are no leaks and I have never observed blue smoke out the exhaust. The rebuild contained all stock replacement components, the only part that is modified is the head. It has oversized intake and exhaust valves as well as some mild porting, unfortunately I never had a change to get it on they dyno to see if it made a difference in power. I basically haven't driven the vehicle for the past year and a half because I couldn't decide what I wanted to do with it, but now I'm looking to cut my losses and be done.
As for the rest of the car, the body is in very good shape for 118,000 miles, with normal paint chips on the front bumper and rear view windows. The front drivers' fender has a scratch and small dent, and the passengers rear fender has a long thin scratch just above a the fender crease. The interior is in excellent shape with no major wear in the seats, though the drivers' seat stitching has come loose in a couple small spots. There are also a few cracks in the dash, though none of them are longer then an inch and are not visible from the drivers' position.
I have a good sized folder of receipts from previous owners all the way up to the initial buyer as well as my own expenses. Located in Minneapolis, MN
Maybe my asking price is ludicrous given the engine issues, but I figure it should be reasonable given the condition of the exterior and interior.
$4000

It's hard to say, I was changing the oil quite often after the rebuild. If I remember right it was at least a quart in the 750 miles I put on it. This spring I drove it about 50 miles on the highway from storage to my house when it was in the 50s and raining, the engine temp stayed well below the upper mark while cruising. Personally I would probably tow it any distance longer then a couple hundred miles just to ensure I wasn't get stranded in the middle of the highway

I'd love to tell you I'm interested, but the timing is bad. Having said that, do you happen to recall:
1. How big the valves are?
2. If you were able to use the existing seats, or if they had to be replaced with oversized seats, as well?
Thanks.

I don't remember specifically off the top of my head, but I believe they are both 2mm oversized. The shop had to grind down a different set of valves in order to make them fit, and I'm guessing the seats are oversized as well given the work that had to be performed but I could be wrong. When I get home from work I'll go over my notes and see if I have that specific information.
After I had the headwork done and before I rebuilt the engine I did have a shop employee at a local Porsche shop tell me he though it had good power for an S2, but I never had a good change to confirm that it made a difference.

Nope, other then the modified cylinder head and aftermarket engine mounts it is completely stock. I had many plans for autocross and track use but they were all abandoned when the engine issues showed up.

It doesn't have any of the nice factory options like M030 or an LSD. A/C worked the last time I used it, and it had been converted to r134 just before I bought the car in the fall of 08

I gave that swap serious considerations. Issue is I'm looking to develop something for the track and this 944 is just too nice and parts are too expensive. I'm hoping to pick up a prepped NA Miata or possibly a Civic to go with my S2000 that I use for autocross.
